Others are having issues with white stuff in their water.... I only use filtered water (PUR which is a 2 stage filter) for my coffee and ice. I haven't seen a problem, nor have I noticed a bad taste or an odor. The only thing I have noticed is that it's a bit difficult to remove the cubes from the tray. I twist the tray, then push from the bottom, and roll back the sides of the tray around the cube. I just ordered two more trays. I also have the Tovolo large spheres. These trays are a lot less hassle than the spheres, and the cubes fit into many more containers, glasses, etc. These are much easier to use overall.
These trays are BPA free, FYI.
**** Update **** I find that I'm only using these cubes... for everything. I also use them at night in double walled plastic tumblers, and my drink is still reasonably cool hours later. I'm tossing all my other ice cube trays. ****
**** Update **** I noticed that one of my trays developed an odor after a while (months of use). I filled it the tray with a vinegar and water (well diluted) solution, let it soak for 5 minutes, rinsed, let it dry, and the odor was gone. The packaging says to wash with vinegar and water periodically, and I can see why. Still my favorite ice cube trays. Also, I sometimes half fill a few of the spaces to allow for a smaller cube when I want it. Works great.
Note that this tray is not enough if you want to make the perfectly see-through ice cubes. That has to do with the speed and direction of freezing, so if you want to do that you will probably need to insulate the tray to ensure it freezes from the top-down. The other day, I put some water in the ice tray and threw it in the freezer. It was only about 50% frozen when I pulled it out of the freezer, thinking that it was done. They were crystal clear, but unfortunately they weren't completely frozen yet. Once they're completely frozen, you'll get the white cloudiness that is par for the course for homemade ice cubes.
I've attached a photo of my ice cubes in my old fashioned!
I love the size and shape. The only con is that it is a little difficult to get the cubes out of the trays.
However, just past the one year mark, I noticed that the ice cubes started tasting very funny. And I do mean noticeable, and not pleasant. I used filtered water, so I knew it wasn't the water.
My boyfriend works with all kinds of plastics and silicone, and upon tasting, he said that it tasted like the plastic was leaching chemicals into the water/ice and advised me to toss them immediately.
So, at $8.50 each for 1 year durability, these trays get downgraded from 4 stars to 2 stars.
Remember when things used to last longer than a year?
If I want to play devil's advocate there are a couple of problems I've found, but they are not major things.
Wish the bottoms were a little more stable, as I get uneven cube bottoms since my freezer has a non-flat shelf (u-patterned).
If you fill these up w/o leaving other frozen cubes in there the tray is very unstable.
It is easier to remove a cube if you don't have all the spaces filled up.
For corner removal I normally have to peel the silicone down the side of the cube b/c of the suction.
Not made for stacking while freezing.
Without doing things to my water, I've found some cubes crack while freezing for some unknown reason.
All in all this is me nitpicking on these trays. I bought 2 and use them both everyday. As with anything new there are learning curves.
can't easily remove just one or two cubes
find that half the cubes are stuck inside the tray
Clearly I had crappy trays. Searching for new ones, I liked the "square" aesthetic of the cubes and ordered them hoping for something better than my old trays.
These are great!
These are not trays where you can "flip over and twist" to quickly empty the tray, but by no means do I find it hard to remove ice from the tray. I love that I can remove cubes easily one at a time.
+ Easy to remove just one or two cubes at a time. Just flip over the tray and pop them out with your finger.
+ No "stuck" cubes.
+ Saves space in the freezer. That was an unexpected bonus.
+ Square cubes look cool. They just do.
Not sure why there are reviews complaining about the "taste". I haven't noticed any issues, but also keep my freezer pretty clean.
I loved these so much I bought a set smaller as well.
