Editorial Reviews

From the Author

It was fun putting together all my knowledge about living in a co-op/condo in South Florida.  I served on a Board of Directors for several years as did the main character Mike.  You see many things from a different perspective after being a director or officer.  The many personalities of residents over the years inspired me when creating characters for The Tower.  If you would like to know what it is like to live in a condo without having to move in to one, be sure to read this novel. Hope you enjoy it!

Mike Murphy is that friendly neighbor who cares. Sometimes he may seem to care a bit too much. Some may take him for granted: He's always there when we need him; others may push him away: "Why is he butting into my business?" Mike knows and feels all of that. He, like all of us, has his own problems to deal with. Sometimes, he gets discouraged. And yet, he continues on to be the good ordinary soul he is.

When I started reading "The Tower Apartments", I expected to be entertained by some crazy dramas among some weird people. But what I got was much, much better: I lived through the ordinary daily life of some ordinary people - every one of them I can name, in my own life. The author, in her unassuming and humble writing style, brought all of these characters to life and made me care about them deeply: Mike, Vicky, Alex ... I felt their simple joy such as getting a hot meal after days of living with no power; I felt their pain such as having to stand in long lines under scorching sun. I cried in both situations.

I was not sure if I would enjoy the book in the first chapter, but my attention was grabbed from the second chapter on and was never let down. "The Tower Apartments" is a unique story written in a unique style. It is something that I feel is lacking in the literature market today: It zooms into the life of ordinary people and reveals many things we have missed and will miss, unless we stop to observe and think. I am very glad I read it. It makes me want to be a better person. For those who desire a little bit of excitement, yes, the Tower Apartments does have a mystery!

The writing reminded me of my girls in middle school. When they wanted to talk it was with all the details - "then she said . . , and I said . . .,and we saw . . ., then we went . . ., yada yada ya. Pretty boring. I quit after only reading about a fourth of the book. I hardly ever do that.

Ms. Lyons captures the essence of a variety of individuals who exist and engage in the complexities of life in a close knit community within a condominium. She manages to give an interesting glimpse into the lives of those who inhabit this particular towering apartment that rises above the streets of South Beach. Her descriptions of the many different residents that chose to buy into the apartment are vivid and entertaining. She captures the personalities of those who came to live there and then left, and those who stayed on to entertain the last days of their lives within the Tower's walls. Ms. Lyons' superb writing that incorporates an array of vivid descriptions of the residents and their varied personalities, as well as her grasp of condominium life, makes this an entertaining read. Her novel contains humor and suspense, as well as a touch of human compassion peppered with friendships, and the endearing love for one's life long partner and the reliving of shared experiences. All in all, I found her book well worth the read.
