I bought this book for my niece with the intention of just wrapping it and giving it away. Instead, I found myself reading it and then talking about it with my friends at dinner the next night. I live on the East Coast and have been up and down the eastern seaboard many times, but I didn't know anything about this part of American history. I was happy to get this information. But really, let's face it, this is a children's book. It's not supposed to appeal to me. Yet I really liked it and, I'm happy to report, so did my niece. She's 8 years old and likes to read, but she's not what I would call a heavy-duty reader. She ended up finding a quiet spot during her party and reading this book. To me, that's the sign of a great children's book. I highly recommend it.

This well-written story for young readers (ages 8 - 12) will even delight adults. The book is based on an actual event that took place during the War of 1812, a time period that is not written about often... America's first "almost-forgotten war." The plot builds at a good pace and the ending is a bit of a surprise. I highly recommend this book.

This delightful story is based on an actual event that occurred when the British invaded the Chesapeake Bay during the War of 1812. The British were headed up the bay. Maryland's boat building towns were often their targets. One clever town outsmarted the British.
The book is very appropriate in this year of the 200th anniversary of this invasion.
The book is enjoyed by children of all ages - adults too!
