One of the coolest features the machine has is a little laser inside of the prize door, which detects if a prize is dropped before the music stops. The music gets faster and faster and if the toy drops, you get a cheer, but if the laser beam is not interrupted it does a losing “womp womp” sound instead. That doesn’t matter now that I’ve disconnected the sound.
The little plastic coins work fine but do get stuck and have to be pushed through with another coin, but my son had discovered that it doesn’t need to be inserted all the way in the first place. Just put the coin in half way and it hits the little switch and activates the game.
The only downside other than the loud music is that the up and down control does not have a limit, so if the crane is all the way raised and you continue to push the lever upward, it starts to lake an awful noise and I imagine that with too many times it might either break the chair or burn out the motor, so definitely something to watch if it’s being used by little kids who can’t determine when to stop holding the lever when the claw reaches its highest point. Same goes for the downward motion, if you hold it down too long the chain goes slack and had to be re-wound for a minute before it starts to elevate again.
So far the claw has easily picked up bouncy balls and those tiny squishys, and I also managed to grab a snack sized candy bar once but it wasn’t easy so I took those out. I may try some gum or other little candies in there. It would be nice if the prize door had a flap in front of it, the bouncy balls go flying out if you aren’t ready to catch it.
All in all I’m pleased with the purchase and know it will be a hit at my twins’ tenth birthday party tomorrow.
Anyway, you insert the coin and the machine comes to life. What makes it so complete is the loud carnival music that will surely haunt your dreams for weeks to come. No way to adjust the noise level, but the children (ages 4 & 8) enjoyed trying to catch candy, even if my ears were bleeding. Judging by the amount of candy wrappers I've found scattered throughout my house, they are able to fairly easily get the candy out. I do know it takes some practice though, as judged by the 368,364 times I have heard this music in one day.
This is one of those toys that I will be happy to see break, but I think it still works and the kids are on a sugar high to prove it.
