I have tried three different "holographic" devices: the Mirascope 6" model, the Mirage 9" model, and this Mirascope 9" model. All three work, but this one is clearly the worst, optically speaking. As one other reviewer noted, the silver paint patches on the top cause a strange deterioration of the mirror surface on the inside that exactly aligns with the paint patches. My unit shows the same effect, and although it is mild, there is a much worse problem with the bottom mirror, which has a large number of very fine radially oriented cracks emanating from the center of the bowl. This causes the holographic image to take on a marked fuzziness, compared to the other two products.
Incidentally, the 6" model produces the sharpest images. Its only shortcoming is that its small size greatly limits the variety of objects that can be put inside.
By this point, I have bought 3 of these. 2 for me and my kids as well as 1 for a gift for an 11 year old. My parents visited us and they requested one for Christmas. This is a pretty large dish and I have had several conversations with my kids about parabolas and parabolic mirrors. I took the base mirror outside and started a few fires to demonstrate the power of this mirror. You cannot get a parabolic mirror of this size for this price. It is plastic and would not hold up to abuse very well. It can scratch fairly easily. It is just a toy that works best being admired and not handled roughly and I think it is priced for that. I have it sitting on top of my 3 ft tall speaker that I walk past all the time. I generally have the frog sitting in it and I am filled with a little bit of science wonder every time I walk past it. Get one if you like inexpensive science illusions!

The Deluxe 9" version of the Mirascope comes with silver-colored circular areas painted on the top half of the toy. The paint used on the outside somehow degrades the mirror surface on the inside of the parabolic shell. When I first used the Mirascope, I noticed that the 3D image it produced was usually annoyingly blurry looking. If I changed the viewing angle (rotating the toy about its center, vertical axis), the image would alternately sharpen, then go blurry. I looked closer at the mirror inside the top shell (the one with the hole in the center) and saw that there were regular areas of blurriness on the mirrored surface which correspond exactly to the location and shape of the silver-painted areas on the outside of the shell. I suppose that a solvent from the paint somehow penetrated the plastic and migrated over time to the inside mirrored surface (which is also plastic), degenerating it.
The toy's 3D effect is really cool, but the blurriness that you see from most viewing angles kills the effect and will make you angry.
DO NOT BUY THE DELUXE 9" MIRASCOPE -- get another version that doesn't have mirror-rotting paint on it.
This thing is one of my faves! It is great for the center of a coffee table or a shelf. Great teaching tool for the idea of concave mirrors! Great example of how three dimensions work with a concave mirror. Came with some things to put inside including a small frog of which is hilarious every time somebody tries to pick it up!
I was looking for a well-sized mirascope to place on my desk, and, following the reviews here, decided to go for the low-cost option. It works great thus far (a few days) generating nice images and amusing everyone who sees it. As other reviewers noted, it should be handled with care to prevent scratches and it seems to be made out of relatively cheap materials, but it performs well (one can see some distortion in the generated image, but the effect is still very clear and amusing). In short - if you are looking for a well-sized decently working and inexpensive mirascope - I definitely recommend this one.
Just a few quick notes about this item; the illusion is very good and convincing. I was quite surprised that it actually worked, I've seen these in catalogs and I always suspected it would be some kind of gimmick or trick. Second point, PLEASE follow the directions when it says to only rinse with water and wipe dry with an eyeglass cloth or similar. DO NOT use a paper towel. It scratches amazingly easily. It is still usable, but now has scratches all over the inside top lid. I did not scrub with the paper towel, I just wiped. So please be gentle. The damage caused to this is my fault and shouldn't detract from the products rating, the directions clearly warned about this. Overall, this was well worth the low price. I think I'll buy another one, maybe two, for gifts. I only wish it were larger, only items smaller than a golf ball can be used.

The boys, aged 7 and 10, was really amazed by the illusion the mirror causes, and really got kicks out of it. They don't understand the physics of it, and attempts to touch the image and couldn't stop getting excited when their fingers go through the image. However, I assume this toy can't last that long to provide lasting enjoyment. It's like a magic trick, once you know how it's done, you only could perform it for an audience once. So, only value this toy has is to show it to people who hadn't seen it before. But as a new toy, my nephews really loved it.
This toy is really amazing. It is a good way to make kids curious about mirrors and lenses. It could also be used as a decorative piece in the house to fool unsuspecting guests. The mirage it creates is truly spell-binding. On the down side, the mirage would not be completely visible in all angles. And essentially it does what it is made to do---to create a magical mirage....but eventually the novelty of it will wear off. But it is a cool and clever invention.
