On a trip to do some cross-country skiing, we happened upon a car (front wheel drive) that had gone off the road, into a deep ditch and snow bank. A park service ranger was there trying to dig the car out and having no luck. I pulled up and offered to just yank her out with a tow strap, but the road was ice as well. As I began to get the strap out, I saw the Trac-Grabbers and thought "Hmm, let's see..." I explained to the lady in the car and the Park Ranger what they were and that I had not tried them before but that in theory they should "help". I quickly installed them through her wheels, even in the deep snow, and asked her to put it in reverse and give it a small amount of gas. The tires spun a single rotation before coming to the rubber block where they stopped...I asked her to give it a little more, but not to too much...and as the car moved over the rubber block they spun again, but the car had moved back about a foot. Being cautious not to just dig holes in the snow, I blocked the road and told her to back up, giving it enough gas to keep momentum...she backed right out onto the road! All of this took approximately 10 minutes...and if she would have had a set with her, she could have freed herself by herself!
I'm impressed! For such a simple device to be so effective was amazing. To the folks that could not get them to work, they are not a high speed device...they are meant to get you unstuck in a nice controlled manner! There will be a set of these in every vehicle I own as well as my families vehicles!
Putting these on was super easy. My truck has the custom wheels with the big star pattern with big gaps that are easy to reach through. I just threaded these around each of the rear rims/tires and strapped them tight. I fired up the truck, and within seconds I was out of my ice-cups and unstuck! These seem like they would work in most situations i've been in where I was stuck with tires spinning.
When I was considering buying them, I was worried about the quality of construction, from the pictures the straps looked flimsy. Well, I was wrong! The straps are very heavy nylon webbing like you'd use for a tow-strap. The d-ring buckles are heavy duty as well, and these things are built tough.
This was an excellent investment. Good design, Good performance.
Before sharing my experiences, I wanted to offer some simple pointers that I have discovered. I emphasize that these are just MY own tips that I have found to be helpful through first hand experiences.
- DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Like any other product that you buy and do not use on a day to day basis, become familiar with it ahead of time. The first time you put your hands on the Trac Grabbers and read the instructions should not be the first time you are using them to get unstuck. Before I purchased them, I went to their website and read testimonials, watched videos and familiarized myself with the product and understood how they were designed and what their intended use was. I also watched several YouTube videos of other people using them and listened to what suggestions they had to offer.
Secondly, USE THE PRODUCT prior to getting stuck. Once I received my set of Trac Grabbers, I was excited to strap them on. I practiced attaching and unattaching them on my truck in front of my house. I put them on and took them off probably 5 or 6 times just so I could become familiar with how they mounted. It is very simplistic, but it doesn't hurt to do it a couple times before having to use them in a "real" scenario
Lastly CONTACT THE CREATOR if needed. This product has amazing customer service. Take advantage of it. Trac Grabber is not interested in selling you their product and never hearing from you again. They encourage feedback; good and bad. After my first time using the product, I had a hard time removing them from my tires. After a little trial and error, I was able to get them off. What I realized was that they undergo so much tension when they lift and move your vehicle that the straps become really tight. That is caused by the rubber block holding its position when the tire spins. Once the block engages, its lifts the vehicle and moves it forward, but really tightens the strap down. I knew there had to be an easier way to take them off so I went to the website and sent them an email. I had a response from one of the owners the same day. He explained to me that in the directions it states that you need to push them back to their original position to take them off. He elaborated in his email to me what that actually meant and why it was necessary. Basically, when you install them, you want to put them on as tight as you can so they rotate around the wheel as little as possible during use . When you start to take them off, simply push the rubber block around the tire in the opposite direction the wheel was spinning and it will provide ample slack in the straps making it very easy to remove.
Now for my experiences. Being in the window and door industry, I spend a fair amount of time on new construction sites, which in South Florida, are comprised mostly of "sugar sand". Sugar sand is notorious for sticking all types of vehicles, from small pick ups to large commercial delivery trucks. Prior to owning a set of Trac Grabbers, I would have to park my F250 out by the street, staying out of the soft sand that surrounds the building. I would then have to carry all of the impact windows and doors from the truck to the designated opening, trekking through the soft sand on foot. These windows and doors can weigh any where from 20lbs to 400lbs, making long distance carries far from ideal. After buying my Trac Grabbers, I am now able to drive around the building unloading the material as I go, with out worrying about getting bogged down in the sand and being stuck.
The first time I used the Trac Grabbers, I had gotten stuck trying to make a 3 point turn in the sand. Once my tires started to spin and it was apparent that I was not able to move forward or backwards, I realized I had an opportunity to put the product to use. With over 1500lbs of windows and doors in the back of my truck, the Trac Grabbers were able to move my truck out of the rut with ease.
Depending on the conditions of the site I am driving on, I sometimes put them on before I even get stuck. I use them as an "assistant" to ensure I do not get bogged down. Realizing they are not made to drive for long distances and at high speeds, I just ease around the property at a controlled pace.
This product is a MUST for anybody that owns a vehicle. They might sit in your vehicle for a year with out ever being put to use, but when you find yourself in that rare situation where you need them; trust me, you will be glad that you have them.
