This Wire Tracer and Circuit Tester - including a sender and a detector - is designed to identify and trace wires or cables without damaging the insulation.
Use as Circuit Tester
Connect two alligator clips to the ends of the wire to check if resistance exists. If yes, the wire could be a short or open circuit. You can use the Wire Tracer function to locate the problem.
Use as a Wire Tracer
By sending a signal down the wire being tested, you can trace the wire with the detector probe. An audible tone will increase in volume as the probe gets closer to the wire. Even when you have a bundle of wires, you can still find the wire you wish to trace with the help of the volume knob.
For telephone lines, the Wire Tracer and Circuit Tester can identify Tip and Ring lines and determine the status of the line - clear, busy, or ringing - making it more convenient to maintain telephone lines.

The instructions were very basic and not written for my specific application so I had to experiment a little to find a method that worked. After that, I had no problems.
Tip 1: Only turn the "volume" adjustment to the minimum level you need. Turning it too "loud" can return false positives when trying to trace a single wire out of a bundle.
Tip 2: It was odd having the off position between two on settings for the switch on the transmitter. You have to be careful when turning it off or you will drain the battery like one of the other reviewers.
Update 3/23/15 - The wand has developed an irritating squawking drone when it is turned up to full volume. Adjusting the nubby at the end of the wand does nothing to fix it, so it seems it is a permanent fault in the wand. Just one click down from max volume is enough to tune down these sounds, but as I mentioned, it is a rather quiet speaker. Again, this is not a heavy duty test and toner set, and I admit this shortcoming is probably stemming from how rough I've treated it over the past month.
I have used the unit to tone and label multiple conductors several times up to now, it is always quick and easy. I am really happy and impressed that the reader (ticker) can see wire in the wall now that I have finally had the opportunity to put it to a real test.
I did try a few sets of batteries to rule that out. I think it was a bad control. Shame, as for the price, this would have been a good product if it worked consistently for me.

I like the principle behind this item, but there does not seem to be enough volume to hear the tone more than 4-5 feet away from the origin. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Chuck
The tone generator works well. The probe however is worthless. It doesn't filter and a component inside it broke right of after one gentle fallPublished 1 month ago by mitch242
It's not Fluke quality but it does work and the price point was half of a Fluke. It feels cheap but does what I need it to.Published 1 month ago by D.W.
Arrived and tried it, defective. The sensor is fine, and the 'Tone' mode works fine on the sender, but the 'Continuous' mode just flashes green for a split second then goes off. Read morePublished 1 month ago by JWiz
