Add an MT-50 Tracer Meter to your solar power setup and monitor system performance with ease. This Tracer Meter can be flush mounted on a wall or surface mounted to the ground to provide an accurate assessment of system performance. Since the Tracer Meter monitors the eight electrical parameters necessary for a healthy power system, it can also help detect a broken or faulty component so it can be remedied without causing further damage. This Tracer Meter is designed for use exclusively with the Commander Charge Controller series, excluding the 60A Commander. It can support not only the latest communication protocols, but also the standard voltage technology for solar controllers. This allows for real-time additional monitoring of operational data and the working status of the charge controller. The user can also browse and modify the controller and load control parameters.

I find the display quite easy to read with the backlight off. If I had to compare it, I'd say it's on par with most of those common indoor/outdoor weather stations I suppose. I've included a picture, where you can see the display. It's mounted in my cargo trailer camper conversion with one of the back doors open. The backlight is off and just whatever light is coming through the backdoor is what my phone snapped the picture at. It's a little blurry, but you get the idea of the display anyways.
Generally speaking, I feel this is a vital component of my system, however, here's the issues I have with it:
My first one wouldn't work properly at night, once the panels went to sleep. It wouldn't read loads, and the power on/off button didn't work. In the morning when my panels woke up, it would function normally again. I contacted Renogy about it, and to their credit, they emailed me a return label and immediately shipped me a new unit once my return was in the shippers tracking system.
Now my second one has backlighting issues. The display is fine, but there's a row of LED's on either side of the display that light up when a button is pressed. They stay on for a few seconds, then shut off. But on this one, only one side of lights light up. I can sometimes tap on the unit, and the sides will switch, once in a while even both sides will light up. Grrr... Not going to send this one back though, simply because it's just an annoyance, and doesn't affect functionality at all. Besides, at this rate, the third one might be even worse.
Some other oddities are the cable length. It lists the length at 6.5 feet, which is about right, but the picture shows much more. Not an issue for me, since mine is mounted right above the controller and is simply a display monitor. But some people might be misled by this I imagine. Also, when mounting the unit with the included box surround (there's also an option to flush mount instead), the surround mounting box is too shallow. The cable has to be folded flat against the connector and squished down when the mounting screws are tightened. I actually wonder if this isn't the cause of some of the issues with these monitors. Simply making the box an 1/8" deeper would eliminate the strain placed on the back of the connector and display.
In summary, I think it's a totally necessary thing to have, and I'm glad I bought it. I just wish it didn't have so many flaws and was better designed.
Watching how my RV solar system is working was cool, but the display left a lot to be desired.
With no backlight and poor contrast the display was difficult to read unless positioned directly in front of it. Turning the backlight on improved it marginally, but also changed the current display screen which then I usually pressed a second button to get back. Also some bubbles between layers had me wondering if the display was delaminating somehow.
I shipped it back, and am content with a voltmeter.
Basically, this is a $20 scam based on the lie that the cheaper meter will not work, which apparently it will because that's what they'll send you. Don't buy this. By that one directly.
If the instruction booklet had been written by someone with better skills in the English language I would have given it five stars.

Been working great ever since I installed, which was right after I purchased.
