Tracey Denim - Bar Italia, the London trio of Nina Cristante, Jezmi Tarik Fehmi and Sam Fenton, have announced details of their new album 'Tracey Denim', which will be released digitally and on CD May 19th on Matador. 'Tracey Denim' was recorded and produced by Bar Italia with mixing from Marta Salogni. It features the single "Nurse!" which was released in March to acclaim, and described as "a hypnotic post-punk ballad" (The Guardian) and "narcotically arresting" (Pitchfork). Over the last two years, Bar Italia have released two albums, an EP and several singles on Dean Blunt's World Music label, leading to much word-of-mouth, sold out headline shows, and festival performances at Pitchfork Music Festival London, by: Larm, OUT. FEST, Le Guess Who?, and End Of The Road.

'Tracey Denim' has an odd track listing. I say that because some are presented in upper case and others in lower. But, whatever the case, ( see what I did there? ) when you stop to consider there's not a single duff track among the fifteen on offer here on bar italia's third album, this quickly becomes immaterial. Ten of these songs may well finish below the three minute mark, but no matter, it's all good. Going by tracks like 'Clark' and 'punkt' I'd say that guitarists Sam Fenton and Jezmi Fehmi are big fans of the first two Cure albums, the latter musician ( or both ) emulating Robert Smith's waspish vocals here and, most notably, on 'best in show'. Likewise, the post punk guitars that colour 'Tracey Denim' recall the Cure yet again ( and overlooked late '70's Scottish band The Scars ). The rolling arpeggio of 'changer' and ringing riff of 'Nurse!' would certainly indicate this, in particular the way the latter's guitars turn abrasive at the drop of a hat. Lead vocalist Nina Cristante naturally opens most of these songs ( to an off kilter piano on first track 'guard' ) and the way she bounces back and forth with her two band mates can often give off the impression that you're eavesdropping on a three way conversation. It's a neat manoeuvre that snakes it's way through the album to great effect, and listening to Cristante I'd wager she has at least one Broadcast album in her collection. A fine example of this vocal triangle comes in the shape of 'yes i have eaten so many lemons yes i am so bitter' surely the song title of 2023. It's unclear whether the drums here are played by the bloke who sits in with the trio at gigs or even programmed for that matter. Whatever the answer, the percussion is always great; crisp and upfront on 'F.O.B.' and vaguely trip hop on 'NOCD', it all adds to the enhancement of 'Tracey Denim' which is rapidly becoming my album of the year with every fresh play. The '78 punk rock sound of 'Friends' flits in and out before you know it, leaving 'maddington' to close the album on a surprising note with a Sundays - like beauty with chiming acoustics and sweet string swept vocals from Cristante that's also over all too soon. I had no idea that bar italia had two albums out prior to this one; and apparently, there's a second album scheduled for release this year ( ' The Twits ') . But before you check that one out, please don't let this dazzling record pass you by.

Un insieme di stili che rendono l'album molto attuale, ma in cui possiamo ritrovare Cure, Sonic Youth, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, un po' tutta la scena alternativa, postpunk e nowave degli anni 80/90.
