About the Author
Karl Riley's breakthrough discoveries as to the causes of high magnetic fields in buildings were helped by his not being either an electrician or an electrical engineer. A fresh viewpoint was needed. He had just retired from science teaching on Marthas Vineyard (MA, Columbia T.C.) when a neighbor asked for help when her guests were getting electric shocks from her outdoor shower. His investigation, using a simple voltmeter, showed the utility company where to dig. They uncovered a sliced hot conductor, cut earlier by a plumber's back hoe. Thus Karl's interest was directed to electrical problems just as Paul Brodeur's book, Currents of Death, focused interest on the health effects of power line magnetic fields and the resulting controversies and denials. He began attending national health conferences focusing on this link, sponsored by the Department of Energy and the utilities. He soon realized this link was real, and focused on designing a more economical magnetic field meter for general use. This he achieved with superior accuracy, and sold under the company name of Magnetic Sciences International. His gaussmeters sold to utilities, electricians and to home owners. They went out to many countries around the world. At this time he moved to California and soon became busy as a consultant and magnetic field surveyor for home owners, businesses, schools, and for the California Health Services, which sponsored many health effects studies. He was chosen to do the discovery phase of the large CA school magnetic field study, uncovering the wiring errors in the Pilot study of 5 schools. Following this he received a CA grant to produce a video for electricians showing them how to trace magnetic fields to their source in wiring errors (Now a DVD). He responded to requests to find field sources in buildings in 17 states. It was clear that this was a new challenge for electricians as well as electrical engineers, so a book was needed, and Karl wrote the first edition in 1995 while attending a health conference in Copenhagen. Though the basic methods have not needed improvement, additional info on grounding and instrumentation were added in 2005 and 2012 revisions. His book was recognized as important by Mike Holt, author of instructional books for electricians, and Karl was invited to be a moderator on Mike's Code Forum for electricians. Karl is semi-retired but still responds to calls for consultations.

This book teaches you how to identify wiring problem on your own without any technical background in electricity. I also ordered the DVD by the same author at his own website. Wiring problem, particularly net current can cause huge surge in EMF. I read the book first; but, after I watched the DVD, everything becomes very clear. Armed with the knowledge from the book and DVD, and with an electric and EMF tester I was able to identify high EMF areas at my home and the type of EMF, therefor helping me to trace the possible source of problems. My computer desk is at a corner between the living room and kitchen. Three months ago, in ignorant, I plugged the CPU into the kitchen circuit; and the monitor power cord into the living room circuits. I had no idea at that time this could create net current(unbalanced current) which give out a huge amount of EMF that is zapping me (giving me headache and a foggy head) every moment I sit in front of the monitor. With this book and the DVD, now I understand the source of the EMF. I unplugged the power cord of my monitor away from the living room circuit, the high EMF in the whole living room dropped to low normal reading. And when I plugged the monitor into the same circuit as the CPU which is plugged into the kitchen circuit, the high EMF in the kitchen dropped to low normal reading in the whole kitchen. I am so glad that I did not have to hire an electrician and open up the walls as least for now. We still have a lot more to test and trace in the house and we have already talked to a master electrician to come to inspect the whole house for us, but with this book I will be able to follow the electrician around and ask the right questions.
After correcting these problems, I now have levels below 2 tenths (.2) milliGauss. I feel better about our living space.
Without this book I would have no clue to tract down the cause of higher EMF levels. One thing though, I do not know the level of expertise of electricians he has run into to, but I do not think one I ever met would even have the reading level to read this book. Around where I live they have a small set of simple skills they use day in day out, basically low level mechanics, working under someone's license doing routine things all day. This is not just as a homeowner but dealing with them in a commercial environment. If you personally are interested in EMFs, you are more than likely to be able to understand this book, but good luck in explaining how a high EMF is indicative of a wiring issue to an electrician if they are anything like the ones I ran into.
As part of my apparent new hobby I discovered street locations where power lines from the top of poles, go down the pole to supply underground lines. At those poles I found readings of 100 millgauss, and there are homes located only 10 ft from pole, not to mention the normal 20 milligauss from the lines above shooting into the house. This was in low load conditions.
If you have these issues in your home you owe it to yourself and your family to buy this book, it might save your health and your life.
