This was a wonderful story about self-discovery, strength, and unexpected love. Elena has been in an emotionally abusive marriage for years and has lost all sense of who she is. Dominic, her husband, was the epitome of a dirtbag, and I hated him from the very first pages of the book. While he hadn't been physically abusive towards her, the way he treated her was deplorable. She was essentially his slave, and he made it so that she is isolated from the people who care about her. Unbeknownst to her, he also had a gambling problem, which puts her directly in the path of Ashton. Sexy, sweet, and charming, he is the complete opposite of the man she's been with since high school, and he opens her eyes to her situation and helps her find herself.

There were times in the beginning when Elena frustrated me, especially when she would defend Dominic's actions, but I guess that was understandable given her years of conditioning. He really had brainwashed into believing that their relationship was the way it should be between husband and wife. Ashton was so incredibly sweet and caring towards her. He was so patient while trying to open her eyes to the situation and make her realize that she was worth so much more than she realized. Their relationship was a slow building one, which I appreciated. It would have been unrealistic for Elena to fall in love instantly, given her situation with her husband. The development of her and Ashton's relationship was sweet and endearing. He not only helps her reclaim her courage and voice, he helps her realize her full potential and follow her dreams. The sex scenes were super hot and intensified as their relationship grew. Ashton is very creative in the bedroom and slowly exposes Elena to his methods, which she finds she enjoys as much as he does.

Uhm, this book was odd and not in a good way. The writing was basic and at times awkward. It was as like the author Googled "verbal abuse" and copied the dialog from a 1989 psychology training video.
The sex scenes were the same. Insert tab A into slot B, sometimes with "kink".
During the climax of the story, there is no build up of tension whatsoever. It is treated as something so mundane that it is easily skipped over.
Also, nobody refers to Colorado as "off-Broadway" (and forget about going into an audition cold after 5 years of not singing and nailing a Sondheim song and getting the lead? Really? Really? ).

When Elena married her high school sweetheart Dominic, she never realized he'd end up being such a hateful man. He is constantly saying hateful and degrading things to her and has caused Elena to think she doesn't deserve better. When Dominic ends up not having the cash he owes the loan shark he's bored money from, he trades Elena for three months. Ashton is astounded that any man would treat his wife that way and only allows the trade to happen in order to teach Elena she's worth more. During the time Elena spends with Ashton, they get closer and closer and both fall for the other. What will happen when the three months are over and Dominic makes it clear he wants his wife back?

I loved Ashton. He may be a loan shark, but he also owns several restaurants and was a great man. He cares for Elena immediately and did everything he could to teach her how beautiful she was and show her the ways a woman should be treated. Poor Elena had been brainwashed by her husband and thought everything she did should be for him. What's sad is that you know there are really relationships that exist like that.

This was a standalone story where Elena slowly learns about herself and what she's worth. It was a story about finding love where you least expect it and for Elena about second chances. It's told from dual POVs and has a happy ending.

I waited for this book for over a month after reading the teaser. I found the plot to be new and I was excited to read it. I was a little disappointed. It was just okay for me. There were times when I felt there should have been more - kind of like it skimmed the surface and left out the really good stuff. I'm not sure who edited it either, but I found quite a few errors (He = then)
This is the first book by this author that I've read. I'll read another one, but if there isn't any substance in that book, then I'll know it's just something I don't care for.
Again, I really wanted to like it, but it just didn't fill me up the way I had hoped it would. Sorry.

I wish I could say that this type of story doesn't happen in real life but we know that it's happening daily. This is a story about domestic abuse and how damaged a person can get when told daily how worthless they are. He trades her in to his loan shark to pay his debt. She's been doing without and working her fingers to the bone so he can party and enjoy life. Fortunately she's given to a man who understands domestic abuse and helps her find her own voice. It's sad to see a woman so beat down that she can't even pick out what she wants to eat.
Ms Brooke has written a story that shows how bad it can get with verbal and emotional abuse. The fact that there were people who were able to help this woman return and heal is what more people deserve.
Great story about abuse and finding out what you really want to do with your life.
