Let me say assuredly that IT HANDLES DENIM WITH LITTLE OR NO PROBLEM !
I'm hemming Jeans, and it works great, even going through through the "4 layer" seams. Just make sure to use a Denim Needle, around #3 Tension setting, around a #2 Length, and go slow.
I'm a 75 year old male, never used a sewing machine in my life, and after a "learning Curve", am having no problems. Simply Love It !

WRONG! EVERYTHING I'VE WRITTEN BEFORE IS WRONG>>>> This is a great first sewing machine. If you've never used a sewing machine before it can be extremely intimidating and this make/model is no different, however there ARE some things that make it easier such as the "automatic" threader. While it's not really "automatic" as it is manual, but it's definitely useful! It will take you a few times to get comfortable with it, but once you do, you'll be threading that needle (and machine) like a pro. Just keep the needle AND presser foot in their up-most positions while threading the machine and/or using the auto-threader and you shouldn't have any problems.
Other tips learned the hard way from this newbie:
- make sure the needle is raised above the fabric before changing the width setting.
- before changing the bobbin tension-screw (only do that if its absolutely necessary), jot down the factory-adjusted settings somewhere.
- jot down any adjustment screw changes you made, fabric and thread used, etc... and use it for future reference.
- reset the bobbin back to factory before readjusting for a new material and/or thread-type so every "jotted down" setting has the same exact starting reference point.
I had to return the first machine I received due to some issues I was experiencing -- hand-wheel was kind of grinding, I couldn't loosen the top-thread tension no matter what I tried, and the bobbin door kept slapping shut instead of staying open. Replacement model was perfect! (edit to add.. for about one or two projects, then it started acting up and I'll never buy another singer again).
I don't use it a lot but any time I do it is a nightmare> It doesn't work AGAIN and I am done with getting it fixed. OI have always purchased my sewing machine from a store and it has worked great so maybe it was shipping. Going to purchase from a store today!
I make quilted covers for stereo equipment, hem Khakis etc. Small stuff, but you need a quality tool to do these sorts of jobs. My Dad has an older Singer that gives us fits with bunching underneath, mostly because there's no provision to adjust the bobbin tension. This machine is a pleasure to use! The stitching on the bottom looks as finished and perfect as the stitching on top. The feed is accurate and true. Not one bit of trouble in everything I've tried do far. Nicely made.
Top reviews from other countries
1) The needle threader works perfectly with some needles, and not at all with others - even if they are all Singer brand. I think the main issue is that finer needles have smaller eyes and it doesn't want to work with those.
2) The top thread periodically loses tension, causing the thread to bundle up under the fabric and the machine to come to a grinding halt. This happens 3 or 4 times per project when using straight stitching only. It happens more often when changing from straight to zig-zag or another kind of stitch. Just means you need to re-thread the machine more often than should be necessary.
3) The one-step button-hole is extremely temperamental. Even following the instructions exactly, it just ends up making a big knot of thread as often as not. There also doesn't seem to be a clear way to tell when the buttonhole cycle is over, even when it does work. This leads to a lot of imperfect buttonholes.
Otherwise, it's a really well-made product that makes learning to sew enjoyable.
The parts were all there but when I started the machine up the hand wheel mechanism made a rough noise and I knew this was just wrong. The threading of the machine and stitching was great but I knew that with the hand wheel noise it won't last long. So I returned it and placed a note so that the next person can just return it without trying it. What a waste of time.
I didn't order another one since the return process was a pain and out of my way.
I did buy a singer machine but at a nearby store and It works wonderful.
Couldn't praise more about the automatic threading! Took a while to understand it, the DVD introduction will show you. I'm monovision, so this is a godsend. Highly recommend this for others with poor vision.
For the price, I'm extremely satisfied. I was pleasantly surprised by its weight, feels sturdy.
