This is really an outstanding book on traditional Japanese architecture that focuses primarily on the Minka style. I highly recommend it for anyone seriously interested Japanese homes. Good balance of high quality color and b/w photos, combined with solid content. Chapters include:

1) The Traditional House in the World Today
2) The Minka Design Method: Floor Plans & Post Placement; Basic Structure; Post as Symbol; Functional Durability; Area Under the Eaves
3) Development of Special Minka Characteristics: Regional Traits & Social Symbolism; Roof Truss Structures; Influence of Roof on Floor plans; Module Based on tatami or Interpost Span; Marking Structural Members; Regional Status Symbols; Strength & Weakness of Sumptuary Edicts
4) Before the Minka
5) Minka from Medieval to Early Modern Times: Houses of Heian & Kamakura Periods; Rin'ami House & Jitogata Mandokoro Sennenya; Urban 16th Century Nara & Kyoto Homes; Early Edo Houses
6) Edo Period Shops & Farmhouses

Absolutely Beautiful Book!
