I work for a college outdoor program and we have a ton of climbing instructionals in our library. I have read quite a few of them and feel like I have a pretty good idea of what separates the good from the mediocre. This book is far and away my favorite, and the only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because it isn't comprehensive. If you want comprehensive then you can't go wrong with Freedom of the Hills, however Freedom of the Hills is DRY and reads like a textbook (plus it's a little bit silly how much time/space Freedom gives to subjects like hip belays, etc., that aren't super crucial to most of us). I felt that this book covered the essentials in sufficient detail with a healthy enough serving of advanced techniques to satisfy the slightly more seasoned trad beginner. The info is solid and the readability is really what makes this book stand out from the crowd. If you're on the fence about making this purchase, I wholeheartedly encourage you to go for it!
