Very Interesting

I'll admit it. I had to google Reunion Island. Though I had heard the name before, I hadn't heard it often enough to know exactly where it was other than somewhere in the Pacific. As it turns out, Reunion Island is quite close to Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. (Foodies know Madagascar because of the premium vanilla beans they produce.) Even more surprisingly, Reunion Island is part of France. The island, population about the same size of my home state of Vermont, has become home to Chinese, Indian, Malay, and African ethnic groups, as well as the French and Portuguese, and traditional food reflects that. Perhaps most surprising to many Americans, though, will be the fact that the food of Reunion Island, like the food of New Orleans, is known as "Creole cuisine."

I found the recipes in Traditional Recipes of Reunion Island interesting and clearly authentic. Author Yohann Maillot offers two appetizer recipes - Sarcives, thinly sliced pork marinated and cooked much like the more familiar Beef Teriyaki, and Creole Samosas stuffed with a spiced meat mixture rather than the more commonly seen vegetable fillings of India - plus recipes for a number of mains, sides and desserts. Creole Chop Suey is a wonderful stir fry dish of meat, broccoli, carrots, bamboo shoots, mushroom, onion and baby corn that I can't wait to try along with the unusual Banana Fritters.

Clearly, the author is not a native English speaker. You'll find smocked sausages instead of smoked, vegetals instead of vegetables and so on, but this sort of thing isn't frequent and it is readily understood. My favorite, though, was this from the Chicken Cari recipe - "Remove head, neck and feet of the chicken, and then chop into pieces." I suspect there aren't too many in the US these days that know how to do that. Luckily, chicken comes from the butcher with that already accomplished. And a good thing too, because Chicken Cari is chicken cooked in a garlicky, onion-y sauce that sounds yummy. There is a Table of Contents, but it is not interactive.

Those who love Asian food are sure to find a recipe or two to love here. Recommended!

I've never heard of Reunion Island! Like the previous reviewer, I had to Google it. I agree with the comment that some history of Reunion Island should b e included in the book to make more "relatable". The recipes look fairly straight forward & sound appealing to me. It's FREE too & that's usually an enticement (usually is the key word here). Not all free books are worth the time you spend trying to decide if they're worth the time!!! In any case, I will try some of the recipes. Interesting!
