Much of this disappearance has been due to a recognition that western and frontier mythology and its heroes never really existed. Yet one might say this of all fiction to some extent; but how do we explain the continued downturn? I think it is due to the evolution of society itself and its tendency toward more realism and its opposite, fantasy. Technology has had a hand in this.
Larry McMurtry decried western mythology and admits that with "Lonesome Dove," he sought to destroy the traditional image. And, he pretty much did it. So, now when people look for a western, they look for very well written books with unique characters blended with the reality of the modern human condition. But that does not mean we must abandon the written past. Try reading, "The Last of the Mohicans," and compare it to a modern novel of any kind, and you will see what I mean.
Having said all this, one might think I did not enjoy the stories. Not so. Some of them were beautifully written, some of them so filled with cliches as to be humorous. My faith in the western and its power was enhanced beyond measure. I saw things I did not like, and things that were truly inspirational. Nothing is perfect, for we live in a chaotic world, and I recommend this book for the lessons it provides, both good and bad. If you've never read a western short story, this is the book you should buy.

Westerns nowadays deal with the same moral ambiguities that beset the present day. This anthology is a good starting off point for anyone interested in tasting the Old West.
The people who inhabit these stories are well-drawn characters and seem real: for example, there's a Pinkerton detective, a greenhorn cowboy, a Texas Ranger, a shopkeeper with a troubled New York past haunting him, a troublesome widow, a Japanese warrior out for revenge, a son who seeks vengeance against his father and even a ghost. Many of the stories are fast-paced, amusing, thought provoking and often moving. At over 380 pages, this anthology is value for money.
I am safe in saying that they are all pretty good. Some I did like better than others, but the next reader will likely have a completely different set of favorites. Something here for every reader. Classic western, crime stories with western settings, morality tales.
I enjoyed myself reading this one.
Well worth the meager price.
Being able to spin an imagined yarn about how things might or could have been in an intriguing and colorful bygone era was fun as well as challenging. You'll find distinctly differing tales here, told by some familiar names as well as some new voices.
I have a personal collection of over fifty old west anthologies, some dating back into the 1940's. The Traditional West is definately the biggest volume of original stories of the group thus giving a lot of bang for the buck. I've read all the stories once and will do so again. I like the cover as well as the stories within.
Everyone likes something new and exciting. This is it! The diversity of styles is sure to satisfy even the most fickle reader.
