Much of this disappearance has been due to a recognition that western and frontier mythology and its heroes never really existed. Yet one might say this of all fiction to some extent; but how do we explain the continued downturn? I think it is due to the evolution of society itself and its tendency toward more realism and its opposite, fantasy. Technology has had a hand in this.
Larry McMurtry decried western mythology and admits that with "Lonesome Dove," he sought to destroy the traditional image. And, he pretty much did it. So, now when people look for a western, they look for very well written books with unique characters blended with the reality of the modern human condition. But that does not mean we must abandon the written past. Try reading, "The Last of the Mohicans," and compare it to a modern novel of any kind, and you will see what I mean.
Having said all this, one might think I did not enjoy the stories. Not so. Some of them were beautifully written, some of them so filled with cliches as to be humorous. My faith in the western and its power was enhanced beyond measure. I saw things I did not like, and things that were truly inspirational. Nothing is perfect, for we live in a chaotic world, and I recommend this book for the lessons it provides, both good and bad. If you've never read a western short story, this is the book you should buy.

I am safe in saying that they are all pretty good. Some I did like better than others, but the next reader will likely have a completely different set of favorites. Something here for every reader. Classic western, crime stories with western settings, morality tales.
