The main character, Afina, a Romanian girl seeking a better future, decides to leave her country and heads for the UK where someone promised her a decent job--a story I've heard several times about the girls from Poland where I come from. However, upon arrival, Stefan, the alleged good friend, takes her passport and later on ... Let's skip the details of how Afina becomes a sex slave. Whenever I recall it I shiver.
Afina is not losing her hope and when the opportunity emerges escapes the brothel. As she runs for the freedom she bumps at the persons who pushes her (figuratively) towards Powell--another leading character developed in an outstanding way. As soon as the lives of Afina and Powell intertwine the novel gains another dimension and the pace speeds up so much I was surprised when the book was over.
Trafficking is not only a very good thriller but also an important eye-opening read for those who had no idea slavery isn't over yet. The plot is amazing yet I still remember the very first pages where Afina's naivety and hope to support her family lead her to Stefan's filthy apartment.
Trafficking is the first book in the series. If you asked me if I want to read more I'd say yes. And if you're looking for a striking thriller I strongly recommend this novel.
At first, I was a bit dismayed as I read the first chapter. It was very much a case of "tell" vs. "show" with barely a dialogue tag to be found. But once I pushed past it into the second and third chapters, the book took off and never let go. A pulse pounding thriller with great characters. Ward's Powell will be one to watch.
This is a hard topic - and not for the faint of heart - but the story was presented with a good balance of explicit content to convey the gravity of the situation while not being gratuitous.
I was quickly drawn into both worlds, Afina's as the girl duped into slavery, and Powell's as the former MI5 agent out to bring to justice his daughter's killer. The secondary characters are equally as well drawn and compelling. The plot is clever and fast-paced. I couldn't put it down, finishing it in a day.
Very much worth the read!
Afina, a young naïve Romanian girl with dreams of making a better life for her and her family, accepts a job abroad in England. However, upon arriving in the British Isles, the girl’s life as she’s known it is snatched away from her. The promised job proves to be a sham. Her passport and money is confiscated and Afina is thrust into the role of unwilling sex slave.
As her situation grows dire and hopeless, a light appears in the guise of help, setting into motion tragic circumstances that will lead to Afina’s eventual freedom.
Trafficking is a solid thriller from the very beginning, filled with enough suspense to keep readers turning those pages. The characters are fully formed and alive throughout this story. Those with a heart toward the sufferings of others will find an easy compassion for the main character and her plight.
Ward’s work is a prime example of just how good indie published books can be. If you’re into well-told stories filled with heart-pounding suspense, you’ll want to add this one to your Kindle or book shelf.
Mr. Ward has created strong characters and a true hero, Powell, who is out to find justice for his daughter's murder. Although Powell would prefer revenge to justice, he knows his daughter wouldn't want that and he abides by her wishes.
This is a character-driven, fast-paced read that you don't want to miss. I look forward to reading, Abducted - Book 2 in the Powell series.
Well written, descriptive, and with an excellent plot line and story that sets the tone for subsequent novels. This is my first read of his work and I can tell you I will be back for more. He doesn't disappoint and leaves you starving to find out how things progress. An adult crime novel filled with intense sexual situations and violence, I recommend ages 18 and over. 5 Stars for an incredible story. This is an author I will read again and again.
