"A man went on a journey."
"A stranger came to town."
Well, this novel breaks that idea,as it encompasses both themes.
Fargo is on a bit of a journey as he heads for an assignment in Santa Fe N.M.
While alone in the desert,he spots buzzards circling above what appears to be a dead animal or maybe even something even worse. He decides to investigate and finds the remains of two Arapho's who have been brutally murdered. He follows the tracks of the murderers and finds himself embroiled in a whole lot more than just the killing of a couple of Indians.
He ends up in Tarryall,in the newly formed Territory of Colorado, and finds a town that is as wild and dangerous as any in the Old West.It is so bad, that killings and disappearances are taking place daily. The whole town is the domain of Robert Shanks and his henchmen; and completly void of any form of law or justice;not even a town Marshal.
It doesn't take long for Fargo to become the hunted rather than the hunter,by more evil doers than he can keep track of.It is obvious that either Fargo will be ambushed and killed;or that he has a huge job of clearing up this evil nest of bvipers. The odds look stacked against him,to say the least.
He does find a couple of friends. One being an old retired army quartermaster and the most beautiful and resourceful woman he has encountered for a long time.Though happy to have found them; even they, add to the problems he is facing.
It is a very well constructed story, filled with well developed and interesting characters, lots of deadly action and the reader is kept wondering where this mess is all going to end up.
Without giving away the story,I can tell you that Fargo ends up having his fill of this den of iniquity, despite a woman of unbelievable talents ,including a maker of an apple pie, that Fargo won't soon forget.
