From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3 An unusual picture book with fold-out and cut-out pages and pop-up pictures about a journey on a steam train. Jeff, Marina, and their stowaway dog Rufus take their first train ride to their grandparents' farm for summer vacation. The book follows them through tunnels, over trestles, over a causeway in a seaport town, and finally onto a ferry which takes them to their final destination. There is a definite Eu ropean feeling to Gantschev's bold wa tercolor illustrations. The combination of two children on a journey alone, the attractive double- (and sometimes tri ple-) page spreads, and the book's un usual design that suggests movement should make this a success in story hours. Candy Bertelson, Multnomah County Library, Portland, Oreg.
