First, I wasn't feeling the chemistry of the leads. About halfway through the book basically NOTHING had happened between them but they were supposedly falling for each other. Sure they knew each other before but we barely got a chance to see what that was like (and the only time we did, they didn't have any interaction). He saved her life in the beginning of the book, then they have a few random conversations (that couldn't have lasted more than 15 minutes) and they mostly end with her running away from him for no real reason. They hang out with her neighbor one evening (longest time they spent together and it was at a kids school function) and apparently that means they are in love. I'm sorry. I just wasn't feeling it.
Second, there is so much and so little actually going on in the book. It feels like there are a lot of ideas just thrown together and it not enough actual story development. It felt like I was being told that the book was progressing and their relationship was progressing without seeing it myself. I prefer a book that paints a picture and takes us on the journey, one that can evoke the emotions and take the reader along the ride too. This one did not hit that mark for me.
Third, there is a point where Derek completely changes his attitude toward Pepper. Zero explanation. We actually stop getting his side of the story for a few chapters so we are completely left in the dark for no real reason and there was no buildup for us to even make assumptions. Things are fine and then not, literally in a few sentences. It was out of character and just didn't make any sense.
Fourth, aside from Derek's sudden acting like a huge jerk (with no explanation) , there wasn't really a big problem in their relationship. No "big moment" or "black period" for the main characters. If Pepper had just let him talk for 2 seconds there wouldn't have been an issue. Instead she runs away (again) and then the book goes down a tangent that does nothing to move the book forward. Then before we know it they make up (in another 15 minute conversation) and all is right in the world again.
The writing itself isn't bad, some parts are pretty funny. But it was a frustrating read because it wasn't great story telling.
It feels a bit like a first draft with a lot of ideas thrown in and a lot of details that still need to be added.
This book was fantastic! It was well written, had a great story line and loveable characters.
Pepper was great her klutziness and attitude made you love her more. She had a pure spirit which was well told.
Derek was the knight in shining armor who was always there, not just for Pepper.
I hope the secondary character Samantha gets her own story because her and her daughter Rylie (whom I adore) deserve it.
I love how she had an awkward, accident prone remake lead character live on her own and find her true calling. She makes friends and even runs into an old flame.
Family dynamics are a little complicated but I believe we can all relate to every character in this book.
Don't want to give more away but I recommend you get this book for a house on a beach, true calling and love and family.
