Very nice book, but a glaring error!

Very nice book, but a glaring error!
I bought this book for my five year old grandson’s birthday. He loves it. Since his birthday party was centered around a dragon theme, this book was perfect.. I made him a reading pillow and embroidered a dragon on it. I put the book in the pillow pocket. He was thrilled with both the reading pillow and Train Your Dragon! The rhyming words, the cheerful illustrations, the kid centered events, and even the Dragon’s name, Diggory Doo, make this a perfect choice for young children. However, on one page ( The pages are not numbered.) there is a glaring grammatical mistake. “Diggory loves it when he PLAY with other girls and boys.” The editors obviously missed this mistake, I used a Sharpie to add the “s” to “play”, but am disappointed that this mistake was missed. Granted, I am a retired elementary teacher and principal and tend to notice such things; but I believe any parent reading this book aloud would be surprised to see this mistake. Even more concerning is that children who are able to read the text independently may not notice the mistake. Young readers internalize “book language” and this error is a critical one. I hope this will be corrected.

It seems very basic when you read it, but it’s effective! Especially if your child loves dragons. My 5-year-old child was having anger problems at home and school and we bought this as a tool to help learn to handle those big feelings. We’ve definitely noticed a difference. We had her bring it to school to read as well as a reminder when she was having those big feelings… the teacher loved it so much she bought some of these books for her classroom!

I have a short temper, which in returns means my mini me has a short temper. I bought this book after reading the reviews and wondered if we could pick up any of the solutions. After one time reading it, we all walk round telling each other to count to ten and not to burn things to the ground. :) Even though counting to 10 doesn't always work, I give this book 5 stars for my 4yr old to be able to remember the sentiments with us not having to repeat them over and over again. Will be buying other books from this series since it was a good learning tool.

I bought this book and two others ("consequences" and "respect") and my 5yo loves them! It helped me introduce ways to talk about empathy and feeling our emotions. I feel like it was just what we needed to plant a seed. The illustrations are so helpful and have made space to talk about what is going on in the story and recalling our own experiences.

This and the other books arrived so fast and we have read them about 5 times each already this evening. I will definitely be buying more books from this series!!!

Bought this for my tantrum throwing almost 3 year old. He LOVES this book & wants to read it multiple times. The situations are relatable: Having to remain calm and patient while waiting your turn, being told no, Not being able to go somewhere you want (outside), meeting a bully, or having to share. While reading the story I enjoyed asking my son if he's ever had to do these things and if he reacted the same way as Diggory the dragon (or had someone act like Diggory towards him). I often repeat "you can't hurt things just because you're angry" and Diggory burning & my toddler hitting definitely relate. The other characters have great emotions on their faces in reaction to the dragons behavior too. My toddler might not be able to calm himself by thinking happy thoughts or counting to 10 but when he was upset about leaving the store and I mentioned controlling his anger his response was "Like the dragon?". This has happened in numerous situations. So thank you.

Edit to add that the typo posted by another reviewer was corrected in the hardback version of mine.

Explains real and difficult subjects in a way kids can understand and connect with- it’s the imaginary dragon who struggles with these things, which is a nice way of addressing these topics.
The books teach REAL coping mechanisms, which build emotional intelligence.

I’m a big fan of the Whole Brain Child, and I think the dragon books are a great addition to whole brain parenting.

My kids are 4 and 6 and really enjoy them, and seem to benefit on an emotional level.
