I mean no disrespect to the many authors who have already written books promoting positive reinforcement to motivate dogs. However, most of these books include personal histories, lengthy discrediting of punishment and compulsion, and chapters of technical jargon. When I loaned them to someone who just wanted to learn some dog training, she just couldn't get through them. Even though I am very interested in learning theory, even I became bored with these books.
This book is wonderfully direct and completely avoids the use of technical jargon. Donaldson identifies the key behaviors that most people want, and gives excellent "recipes" on how to get those behaviors on cue using the lure-reward method. Her simple "drop-stick-push" formula is EASY and her recipes naturally include fading the lure - a big sticking point for those people who dislike luring. The troubleshooting chapters are fantastic and equally direct.
I now have a book I can highly recommend for basic training. (Behavioral issues are not addressed in this book. Since behavior issues are dealt with in a different fashion and can't be given the "recipe" treatment, I think that decision was a wise one. Most training books that tack on behavioral issues give them far too light a treatment.)
Then I found this book just before starting my local obedience class. I watched the DVD first and then started exercises, and I felt instantly empowered, and my sweet dog really enjoyed our sessions, and the training achieved in just a few short weeks has been astounding. What is more, after a few live class sessions, I realize I'm actually getting more done with the book in our private sessions in my computer room at home than in a class with 10 other dogs and owners. I'm not saying that the book program should replace a live class, but if I had this book on DAY ONE, I wouldn't have been been so panicked as a dog novice.
There are some things I might have preferred to make the book perfect as a reference
1) a kindle edition (to accompany a hard traditional copy)
2) better separation of theory and practice sections - this only because the book ends up as a reference, so once the theory is read, the section on practice will be where you'll spend most of your time.
3) maybe a good schedule on the best order of behaviors to teach
All in all, this book is by far the best reference I've found for training. Thank you so much Ms. Donaldson, and thank you Amazon for making the package so incredibly affordable.
This book is extremely detailed but super easy to read and use. Jean is exceedingly knowledgeable, but she writes in an easy, friendly, often witty style. If you are a visual learner, you are in luck! This book also comes with a CD that details every technique in the book!
Whether you have a puppy, an adolescent or a grown dog, this is THE book for you if you want to do any type of training. It will not only help you train your dog, but will help build a bond of love and trust along the way that is priceless!
Links to worksheets and videos are fantastic. She, along with Karen Pryor and Dr. Patricia McConnell are the go-to trainers who best understand the language and values of this species we often think we “know.” Highest recommendation.
I'm hoping to find some good video instruction showing actual crazy, clumsy, goofy puppies transformed by training - not these "doggie actors" that are well rehearsed. Suggestions?
