I find it ironic that one of the main characters is an author working on editing and revising his first novel, because I'm pretty sure this book had no editing whatsoever. The entire thing is filled with grammatical errors, missing words, sentences that make no sense. wrong names, and contradictions of things the author says earlier in the story.
I could overlook some errors if the story is good, but it wasn't. The character of Chris is fairly consistent, but Mason's personality was all over the place and didn't make a lot of sense. Some story arcs that should have been integral to the central plot (such as the issues with both Chris and Mason's exes) were just dropped once Chris and Mason got together the first time. It felt like the author either had no idea where to go with the story or couldn't be bothered to actually write a real story once the sex started. And, to make things even worse, you get to the end only to find "Coming soon: The Trainer 2 and The Trainer 3!" I absolutely detest this tactic of writing one story and breaking it up to get more money. If there is anything worse than a lousy book, it's a lousy book the author has the gall to charge extra for to see how it ends. Definitely not worth it!

Chris is just out of a bad relationship with a man that put him down at every opportunity, and finally dumped him for a younger model. He decided that to help regain his self esteem, he needs to get back in shape, and for him that means hiring a trainer. A friend connects him with Mason, one of the hottest men Chris has ever laid eyes on, and someone that he can talk to easily about just about anything. Mason is just coming out of his own bad relationship, with a toxic woman that uses their young daughter as leverage to get what she wants out of Mason. So, while Chris is attracted to Mason on many levels, he know a relationship is impossible, because Mason is straight, right?

“The Trainer” manages to pack a nice little story into a very short format (the total is less than 100 pages if this were a print book.) There’s nothing too heavy here, but there is a nice tension as Chris and Mason try to figure out whether they’re going to be friends, or more. The characters are developed enough for you to get a feeling for them, and you might even care enough to want to give Chris a smack for acting like the loser he is trying not to be.

Although the author clearly plans to make a series out of this story, things are brought to a reasonable conclusion by the end, so you aren’t left hanging wondering what will happen, if anything. The book lays lots of groundwork for future conflicts, so it’s likely that additional editions will involve a little more drama.

As it is, this is a light summer read that would probably be perfect for the beach or a short plane ride.

Even though, I'm not fond of unfinished stories going on book 2,3...this one, I didn't feel a sense of cliffhanger. Chris is far from his country, bumped by his ex-lover going through very low self-esteem. Struggling to get himself together hires this gorgeous trainer and falls in love. Mason, a so called straight ( bi, closeted, curious ) has feelings for Chris but Mason has a daughter that he loves very much but she comes with a mad and mean ex-wife. The writing is delicate and straightforward although the turmoil of feelings are striking. OK there are editing problems but that didn't get me. I'll be waiting for book 2 and 3.

I read this book a while back and didn't review at that time, now I re-read it knowing that we have a lot more in store for us in this series. This is one of the novels I first read that got me into MM Romance. I guess you could say I was definitely intrigued because I have read all of Jamie's books and can't get enough. This story is about a writer, a sweet, gay man named Chris that has been dumped by his ex, Tim, and now has a very low self esteem of himself and having a real problem getting over him. He knows he needs to change and move on with his life. He still lives in Costa Rica where his ex lives which doesn't help. He decides to physically work on his body and make himself more attractive to other men and he asks his assistant if she knows of anyone that could be a personal trainer. She gives him a name and determined to make this happen he texts Mason, a straight, divorced man who has lost his job and does personal training on the side. When they finally set up a time to start and they meet, a strange connection between the two starts, but confusion for both sets in driving them apart. After seeing each other at the local gym, Chris tries to apologize for the way he has acted and Mason goes into a dominant mode. This is only a start of a relationship of friendship and respect, but turns into something more. At this point it appears to be a relationship that is blossoming, who knows what is going to happen. Knowing Jamie, this story makes me think of him starring in his own novel. You know they say to write about what you know and I think he does just that. I loved this because it was a sweet, love story that I really look forward to seeing where it will all goes. A story that the characters develop slowly for a reason within their relationship and the story line is just getting stronger. The Hot sex develops as their relationship does. If you are a fan of MM Romance you will like this. This was the one that got me hooked.
