Before i get into the actual quality of the film, I wanted to praise the condition in how this 4K copy came in for me. For some frustrating reason, Amazon and the sellers beneath them have been giving me either poor quality disc's where they stutter, freeze, and ruin the whole film experience, or they will short sell me the product when it's missing the digital copies, a Blu-ray copy, or both. But I wanted to thank the seller for giving me all of these features with an uninterrupted film. So, kudos for that.

NOW, Training Day itself: phenomenal film, and a classic gangster, underworld film. Denzel Washington is perfect as his role of Alonzo and Ethan Hawke does his part well as the rookie cop Jake Hoyt. They are excellent foils in a story about how far one cop in the hellish world of crime. I love Antoine Fuqua's directing and the writing of this script is really good too, as I think that the film is smarter and deeper than it appears as Fuqua delves into hidden mythology in the film. It's great. Yes, some people will complain a certain part of the film that think it's an error or fault in the writing (I don't want to get into it as it will spoil the film), but I'm honestly willing to excuse it for certain reasons. Regardless, Training Day is a classic that shows you the corruption that takes place in Los Angeles.

I am a HUGE fan of Denzel Washington. He has brought so much magic, comfort and love to the silver screen and has become a wonderful role model of what it is to be a man and a powerful actor. Every role he has played, particularly as Malcom X, has shown us strength and an ever present honesty and decency even when he is playing a man with slightly tarnished morals. No matter what, you always love Denzel and know it's him!
When TRAINING DAY begins, we are introduced to Rookie Officer Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) and his wife; a very boring couple. The pace of the movie is slow for the first 7 or 8 minutes as we meet them and find out our rookie is beginning his first day in the narcotics division of the LAPD; a really nice promotion. And he must go to meet his supervisor for this training day at a local coffee shop. And there he is. In all his wonderful glory - Mr. Denzel Washington sits at the booth, looking fine as wine in all black, reading a paper. You are in love again, as you were in every one of his movies
UNTIL....
he opens his mouth to speak.
And you suddenly realize THIS AIN'T DENZEL!!!
From the very first line spoken by Officer Alonzo Harris, you will be uncomfortable, frightened, intrigued, amazed and stupified. His deliciously evil way of speaking, looking and acting will have you spellbound and scared to death. He is beyond mean. And you immediately wonder how poor rookie Hoyt will ever survive the day with this crazy man.
I found TRAINING DAY to be inventive and incredibly disturbing. Yes, it has formulaic car crashes, violence and dialogue. And the stereotypical latin and black criminals would seriously get on your nerves IF it weren't for the powerful performances by Denzel and Ethan. This is a movie designed to showcase their acting ability and it does so in a powerful way. But ever present is the underlying message that says this is how things actually are in many large urban cities. As Alonzo says, "To catch a wolf, you have to become a wolf". And that drives this movie and keeps your heart pumping at a mad pace till the very last line. Halfway into the credits you'll suddenly realize it's over and stumble around wondering what kind of world are we living in. YES, it will affect you like that!
In TRAINING DAY there were many lines of dialogue that stuck in my brain; some funny and some wild. But without doubt, the most powerful one came after rookie Hoyt discovers he has been played by Alonzo all day. That Alonzo has been planning Hoyt's destruction from the beginning and he accuses Alonzo of this fact with such naivety and surprise. Alonzo turns to him and says, "[Expletive], this ain't no checkers!! This is CHESS!!". Meaning, nothing in life is about fun, it is calculated and each move done to advance the desired end result.
At the end of this movie, you will be wishing for - praying for - Officer Alonzo Harris to DIE!! You will want that evil to be destroyed and for the rookie Hoyt to somehow get out of the web of evil spun for him by Alonzo. You will throw popcorn at the screen.
And you will know, without the tiniest doubt, that who ever that evil guy is... it darn sure ain't Denzel. THAT is the very discription of an actor who DESERVES A BEST ACTOR OSCAR!!!
I VERY HIGHLY recommend this movie. PLEASE buy it. And prepare to step outside your comfort zone.

Ich mag nicht alle Filme von Antoine Fuqua, aber sein 2001 entstandener "Training Day" ist für mich trotz der an einigen Stellen zu affektierten Darstellung von Denzel Washington, in seiner ersten "Bösewicht" Rolle , einer der Thriller Klassiker des vergangenen Jahrzehnts. Washington erhielt für seine markante Performance als korrupter Boss des Drogendezernats auch prompt einen Oscar als bester Hauptdarsteller 2002. Trotz der bereits erwähnten Kritik war dieser Erfolg nicht unverdient, denn Washington trägt einerseits fast im Alleingang den Film, hat aber auf der anderen Seite mit seinem Co-Star Ethan Hawke einen genauso gut agierenden Gegenpart als Partner. Ein Teil der Spannung geht einzig und allein auf das gute Spiel des ungleichen Duos. Beide Männer treffen sich am besagten "Training Day". Für den jungen und ehrgeizigen Officer Jack Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) geht es dabei um sehr viel. Denn er wird von Detective Alonso Harris (Denzel Washington) daraufhin geprüft und gemustert, ob er in dessen kleine 6 Mann starke Drogenabteilung passt. Dieser Probetag entscheidet insofern über die weitere Zukunft von Hoyt, dessen ehrgeizige Pläne eine große Nummer beim Drogendezernat des LAPD zu werden. Alonso Harris gilt als schwierig und egozentrisch und alles hängt nun davon ab, ob Hoyts Nase passt und er angenommen wird. Tatsächlich setzt er sich auch am Anfang des Probetages ins Fettnäpfchen, dass in einem Restaurant beginnt. Harris nutzt dabei die Fahrt mit dem Youngster durch die Straßen von Los Angeles sich selbst effektiv in Szene zu setzen als der Mann, der alles unter Kontrolle hat. Der Mann, der die ganz großen Fische fängt, weil er auf viele kleine Fische als Informanten bauen kann, da er immer mal wieder ein Auge bei deren Verfehlungen zugedrückt hat. Alonso Harris behauptet auch, dass nur der ein guter Drogenbulle sein kann, der die Droge auch kennt und schon ausprobiert hat. So setzt er sogar auf seinen Untergebenen Druck aus sich was reinzupfeifen, ansonsten - so Harris - könne er den Job eh vergessen. So steht Hoyt sozusagen für einige Stunden dieses Arbeitstages unter Drogen, alles gedeckt und gutgeheißen vom Boss, der den Neuling auch in die korrupten Geheimnisse der Abteilung einweiht. Gemeinsam besuchen sie einen gewissen Roger (Scott Glen), nach Aussagen von Harris, einer der mächtigsten Drogenbosse der Stadt. Der Kontakt zu dem Kriminellen ist äusserst freundschaftlich....
Die erste Stunde des Films behandelt dieses Abtasten der beiden ungleichen Männer. Auf der einen Seite der selbstsichere, aber korrupte Harris - auf der anderen der ehrgeizige, aber engagierte und ehrliche Hoyt, dem durch die Erlebnisse des Probetages bewusst gemacht wird, dass er - sollte er am anderen Tag zum Team gehören - sehr viel seiner Ideale aufgeben muss, denn die Methoden der Verbrechensbekämpfung sind denen der kriminellen Gegner sehr ähnlich. Nach einer Stunde Spannungsaufbau kommt dann mit aller Wucht die Schlüsselszene des Films und plötzlich sind die Karten dramatisch neu gemischt und mit dieser emotionalen Dynamik lassen sich auch die weiteren Aktionen ableiten. Immer mehr gerät Hoyt dabei in eine akute Lebensgefahr, die nur deshalb eine rettende Wendung erfährt, weil er im Laufe des ereignisreichen Tages die Cousine eines Gangmitglieds vor einer drohenden Vergewaltigung gerettet hat. Ansonsten ist die Story von David Ayer sehr geschickt aufgebaut und gibt mit einem Paukenschlag den doppelten Boden der Geschichte frei. Hinter der Kamera stand mit Mauro Fiore ebenfalls ein Könner seiner Zunft. Selbst der etwas zu überladene Schlußpart kann dem Film nicht mehr seinen Klassikerstatus absprechen. Diesen hat sich Antoine Fuguas Film schon mit der ersten ruhigen Hälfte und dem unvergessenen Hauptteil mehr als verdient. Die Handlung spielt sich im Wagen von Alonso sowie an zahlreichen Brennpunkten der Millionenmetropole ab, Schauplätze sind die Elendsviertel der Stadt, die von Drogendealern und Gangs beherrscht wird. Über allem steht dieser selbstherrliche Cop, der glaubt eine Art "Gott" zu sein, doch auch er ist bereits ein Gejagter.

Just to be clear, this is a review of the 2023 edition of the Training Day 4K Blu-ray, which features an updated transfer of the film. It has a corrected colour mix and a change to the aspect ratio in order to match the original theatrical release. It's also worth adding that they used a brand new scan of the original film negative as opposed to referring to a previous digital master. I can confirm that it looks incredible compared to the previous 1080p Blu-ray version. The colour mix is noticeably different but at the same time looks very natural as opposed to looking over-processed. The image quality is very sharp throughout, and like all good 4K transfers, the depth and the detail are incredible. As with the new colour mix, the overall render quality of the image looks very natural and cinematic. If you are purchasing the 4K edition of this movie, make sure you go for the 2023 version.
