I had a copy of this book since 1980's it has a lot of common sense approaches. I like Chapter 9 and the method of teaching a dog to Heel. I have used that method for 30 plus years for large and giant breed dogs and it works very well.

The practical advice in this book, at least for me, could fit in a thimble. I thought the book would give me instructions for correcting incessant barking, aggression towards other dogs, etc., but it really barely addressed these problems. There is too much emphasis on tricks, competition training, etc., and not much on day-to-day behavior problems.

This is an excellent book focusing on basic training. It does not cover odd behavioral problems. If you want that, Tucker has one called Solving Your Dog Problems.

Tucker uses no nonsense training techniques used by both the military and dog training professionals, and avoids trendy training tricks. Pictures are dated, but who cares? The techniques work. I've been using them for several generations of dogs now. Focus on the basics from simple sit, down, and stay, to advance recall from a distance techniques.
