Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Trainwreck Book One is the beginning of a five part series following Detective Vincent Sweetwater. Vince is a guy who's a wreck. He thinks he's his own worst enemy, but there may be a man out there who is more dangerous. We follow Vince through his moments of self-destruction, self-discovery and possible redemption.

A serial killer is on the loose and Vince is forced to be the one to hunt the man. Keys to the case lead Vince to his horrifying past. With the help of his estranged wife, Mica, and his foster brother, Nick, Vince begins a journey that leads deep into the darkness surrounding his childhood.

Vince is a good soul, but a bit misguided at times. He loves his wife, but needs more than just her love. Trainwreck delves into the dark side of sexual desire, bisexuality, and flirts with the mind of a killer.

Trainwreck is a psychological thrill ride I hope you will enjoy.

Well written. I have to say that this is very hardcore, not for everyone. Some parts are tough to stomach. I'm left with so many questions about Vince, and the mysterious Greg. Good to know book two is out.

Trainwreck (Trainwreck #1) by Michele Micheal Rakes

CLIFF HANGER STORY
M/M Mystery, Thriller,
Triggers: Torture, murder, control, rape, child death, emotionally stunted main characters, alcoholism, questionable suicide ideation
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

This was a difficult story for me. I found myself having to go back and try to find pieces of the story that I had seemingly missed, but never was quite able to put together. There are several moving parts in this story and they don't always talk with each other.

You have Vince who is struggling to come back to a life after the loss of his child and his emotional loss of his wife. Despite his life as an undercover, he's been thrust in to the spot light and realizes that his life in undercover is over. With a murder case plopped in to his lap, it brings back flashes of a past life - a life that he has tried and failed to forget. Hints of past tortures, glimpses of a life that once was out of his control - whereas the chaos that has become his life is all his own doing.

I had a difficult time with, what I think was supposed to be his conscience speaking with him - or him own inner monologue - it was strange and you never really get a good grasp on whether or not he takes his own advice.

Then you have his wife, who despite being in a marriage with someone who hates her, keeps on trucking. Not really sure why she does, other than out of obligation from their shared past. I don't really get a good idea of her motivations in this story - it seems that she loves Vince, but she also loves Nick - both seem brotherly.

(Originally reviewed for Love Bytes Reviews with a copy provided by the publisher / author for an honest review.)

I literally feel bruised. What a story. I want to say right up front that I was warned by the author that this one was dark. It is actually VERY dark. There are references to child rape, there are murders, there are instances of teen abduction, torture, sexual assault and murder. There are flashbacks to horrific events that occurred in the past. This book is not for the lighthearted.

The other thing I was warned about was that most of this first installment is heterosexually oriented. There are references to some mysterious man named Greg that the MC, Vince, formerly had some BDSM dealings with, but we don’t learn any more in this installment than those brief references. There is a LOT of hetero sex, so if vaginas offend you, you should probably skip this one. As I said, the author warned me about that, and that is why I read and reviewed both Book One and Book Two at the same time.

In this first installment in what is going to be a five part serial, we meet our main character, Vince. We meet Vince as he barely survives an attempted suicide on his motorcycle. We don’t understand until further in the volume though, what drove him to that dark place.

Along the way through this story, we are dragged through some horrific events. Tortured young girls, a shadowy killer…who might have ties to Vince, Vince’s on the rocks marriage…which we learn is because of his daughter’s death in an accident. A dead girl, with a message for Vince contained in her corpse. The list goes on.

TRIGGER WARNINGS: eludes to child rape, with some scenes on page. Torture, kidnap, suicide, drug use, alcoholism, child abuse, pain play, erotic asphyxiation, violent drunk, dead child, BDSM, cheating

Warning #2: This is the first half of a story. I don't mean part 1, but literally one half. It stops abruptly, with a cliffhanger. So, be warned.

Okay, so this is a bit darker than some of my recent reads, but it totally takes me back to some of my early reads from this year. The pain and torment of the main character is the driving force. But, you know what? The first thing that really struck me when I started this book was the brutally honest and touching Dedication and Acknowledgements. They made me want to love this book and the author. And, I do.

Forget romance, forget all those mushy feelings you want from an MM romance. This isn't it. This is a super hard hitting, edgy, dark read, with one heck of a twisted main character. But, amongst all of that – buried beneath the pain and the torture – is a man who is crumbling to pieces and who isn't quite sane anymore. And he hasn't been for a long time.

Vince's past is an enigma that takes a long time to figure out. As the case progresses, so does our understanding of this very complex man. Sure, he's a total man whore, but I love how the author makes it very clear why he's like that.
