About the Author
Richard St. John was on his way to the TED conference when a girl on the plane asked him, "What really leads to success?" Even though he had achieved some success, he couldn't explain how he did it. So he spent the next ten years researching success and asking over 500 extraordinarily successful people in many fields what helped them succeed. After analyzing and correlating millions of words of research, and building one of the most organized databases on the subject of success, he discovered "The 8 Traits Successful People Have in Common" and wrote the bestseller 8 To Be Great. In his book and TED talks,he shares a wealth of wisdom from the world's most successful people – knowledge that can help others succeed in their own way, whether it's building a business, raising a family, escaping poverty, or changing the world.

I came across Richard St. John after being one of the ten million other people to view his inspiring three-minute TED Talk. I purchased this book because I wanted to go deeper. You can hear Richard's voice as you read this book since it carries his same humorous, content-rich tone.
His TED Talk details the 8 traits that successful people have in common. Here are those traits with a few of the deeper nuggets that I found relevant:
-> Get out there and explore many paths
-> Pursue your passion, not money and fame
-> Success does not come easy
-> We overvalue talent and undervalue hard work
-> Spend an intense amount of time focused on the one activity you really love
-> Worry about your interest, not your ability
-> If you have self-doubt, you are not alone
-> Don't get too comfortable
-> Make mental connection between diverse things
-> The best way to have a great idea is to have a lot of ideas
-> Practice to constantly improve yourself and what you do
-> Meet the minimum standards on your weaknesses and move on
-> Ask, "Who do you serve?" and "What value do you serve them?"
-> Listen to others and serve them something they appreciate
-> To succeed a lot, it helps to fail a lot
-> Being criticized is a sign you are on your way to success
This is a book that you will want to read slowly. It is jam packed with how-to tips and ideas that you need to deeply contemplate. Buy this book, keep your highlighter handy, and enjoy!
"Know that hard work is going to pay off. It may not pay off today, but the longer you stick with something the more it pays off. You just have to put time in on the treadmill and trust that it is going to make a difference." - Kate Laidley vice president, JN4D
Well, I've now finished the book. If you are starting out, starting over, or just simply overwhelmed...and wondering just what do I do,,,this is a must read for you. I did not realize just how much I needed to read it until I finished it. This book is powerful, straightforward, and nothing more, nothing less, than a contemporary "Think and Grow Rich", and then some. I really think than even Napoleon Hill would praise, buy, read, and recommend it for anyone interested in a "Success Philosophy". Can you tell, I really like this book. Now, to read it, with laptop and notepad at hand. Happy Reading!
* Authoritative - he's interviewed eminent people in many fields
* Honest - it tells it like it is, even the hard truths
* Succinct - he doesn't waste space and my time on fluff, unlike SO many other books
My only critique is that in the section on improving skill he didn't include the excellent research about how exactly this is done: namely (from memory!) by focussing in on repetitively practicing the things we are NOT good at, with a specific emphasis on improving. That's why many people remain mediocre at a particular thing, despite countless hours of practice. They just repeat the whole process, instead of focussing on their weak points and deliberately trying to improve.
With his permission I am using his material and research in my seminars tied into my keynotes and stories.I am seeing the results First hand on the feedback I am getting from top international corporations. This important information is changing lives...has changed mine and continues to change many attendees at my seminars..Thank You Richard for all your time to research and share...8 to be great a must buy if you need to know what really creates success in anything.. buy it now...it will change your life...Johannesburg.South Africa
