Very wide banded antenna

I bought this antenna for transmitting on the VHF/UHF ham bands and it works great. Even better, this antenna is very wide banded. I hooked up my SDRplay RSP1A sdr receiver to it and I can listen across the entire band, even HF, it's far better than the longwire I was using. I don't have a cb radio to talk on, but I am sure it would transmit fine on there as well. I can receive it well through. Overall the antenna seems to be made very well, just make sure to screw the elements in as far as they will go, use RG-8X or better coaxial cable and you shouldn't much trouble. Yoi will also need a mast pipe that is under or around 1 1/4 inches, too small and it will wobble, too big and it won't fit inside the antenna hub. I used 10 inch piece a 1 1/4 inch pipe, then connected it to a 39 inch Winegard satellite dish J pipe mount Basically I drilled two holes through the antenna mount and two holes through the pipe and inserted two U clamps to hold it all together since I couldn't get the right size clamps. I wasn't going to pay 15 dollars for mast clamps.

This is a great antenna if you've got a radio like the IC-705 that does HF/VHF/UHF but only has one antenna connector. I took the radiating part of the tunable radials out (leaving the black loading coil) and ended up with a SWR <2 across the entire 10m band. As another review noted, adjusting the whip doesn't seem to do anything. Of course it also works on 2m/70cm.

I also had the Tram 1410 which is similar but without the whip (and a great antenna if you don't need HF). One difference between the two is that the 1410 worked for me up around the GMRS frequencies at 465Mhz but the 1411 doesn't. The 1410 works OK for satellites and SSTV from the space station, so I suspect the 1411 will as well.

I've got this up in my attic, and have still been able to work 10m contacts in South America from the southeast US on 10 watts with FT8. Furthest contact has been a little over 4500 miles away.

In short this is a great bang for the buck antenna. It'd make a great antenna for Technician class operators since it covers VHF/UHF and dips into the 10m band which they have some privileges on.

This is an interesting-looking antenna, kind of like an artist's interpretation of a comet done with stainless steel rod. It is easy to assemble, but requires a bit of time to tighten lots of lock nuts. With little weight or wind resistance, it can be put up with TV antenna hardware. It is meant primarily as a receiving antenna covering a very wide range of frequencies. It is, however, resonant in the 2-meter and 70-cm ham bands and appears to transmit quite well there. The antenna is advertised as working on CB. Two of the radials are adjustable to tune it to the higher or lower channels. I made those elements as short as possible, hoping for some 10-meter coverage. The 2:1 SWR points turned out to be at 27.6 and 28.7 MHz with 1:1 around the middle of that range, well inside the 10-meter band. It seems a bit small to work well there, but it promises more versatility than expected. The antenna is a bargain price compared to others of its type, which makes it even more impressive.

Received the box this afternoon and promptly opened it up. All of the parts were accounted for and in good condition. Be careful that you don't discard some of the hex-nuts with the packaging. Three had vibrated loose during transit and were inside the plastic bags but unattached to anything. Just be aware of that. It looks as if the assembly will be very straightforward as it all just screws together. The instructions are easy to read as are the limited graphics. The only thing that I am a bit concerned about is that the base assembly is not tightened up 100% and has some wiggle to it. There is maybe 1/8" of rotation available and I think it should be tight. I hope it doesn't introduce any noise on the received signals. I'm unable to discern how to get it tight so I'll have to live with it. I hope it receives and if it does then it's worth the money. I'll see.

This antenna was machined out of solid aluminum for the hub and the spokes. Easy to assemble, but be careful when opening the box as sometimes the tiny set screws escape the bag and are in the bottom of the box. Other than that caution, assembly was straightforward and finished antenna looks and works great. I now get clear reception when antenna is in my attic with my Uniden scanner. Also, make sure you read the product dimensions as the antenna with top spoke is pretty tall. Outside, this isn't a problem, but if used in an attic make sure you have the room for it.

I like it because it is inexpensive, well made and easily assembled. Surprised it doesnt use a "N" connector as uhf type connectors are considered a big nono for Vhf and Uhf. Testing found it to have a 7 to 10db less signal than a properly sized vertical dipole at 144, 432 and 1296 mhz. So for a wideband system it does well but a sensitive antenna it is not. Preamps made no difference as my SDR receiver was less than 2 feet from the dipoles or discone under test.
