After reading some of the unfortunate stories concerning the antenna I was a tad concerned. E.g.— becoming unscrewed from it’s hub while driving, or the adhesive pad not working as touted, but I went ahead and made the purchase.
I did follow the instructions/directions to the “T” concerning the mounting of the antenna to the back glass. All I can say is to make sure that glass is clean as you can get it, and wipe it down with the included alcohol prep pad and wipe it dry with a clean towel. Also, it can be a challenge- especially with a factory tinted back window- to get the inside and outside antenna bases centered, especially on a sunny day. As I’m sure y’all know, once you place that puppy on the glass— it’s “THERE” for basically keeps! I used the brownish-red wires from the back windows defroster to help center it along with some blue painter’s masking tape.
I’ve had absolutely no issues or problems with the adhesive itself. Right after mounting the antenna we took a trip to Florida and back to central Virginia and it didn’t budge. While checking it during rest stops, I did notice two things; first, the antenna can become unscrewed where it attaches to its hub sometimes- especially when it’s first mounted. Second, it has another large Phillips head screw that controls the outward angle that you’d like to put it at; I’ve had some issues as of late (it’s was mounted appropriately four to five weeks ago) with this angle screw loosening. The antenna itself is mounted close to the upper left drivers side back window of the truck; the screw itself faces the other way, so it’s a real pain in the rear to get a small stool to be able to reach it for tightening. (A wing nut setup of sorts would be so much easier!)
One little trick that I came up with for the possibility of losing my antenna is as follows: I bought a piece of fine linked chain, and cut it to approximately 8”; I soldered it firmly towards the bottom of my antenna near the hub. The other end of the chain was hooked via a small eyelete screw to the plastic frame of our truck’s bedcover. If the antenna becomes unattached, it will of course make a bit of noise to alert us; the chain keeps it lightly flapping on the bedcover and frame- and not along the side of road somewhere. 🤷🏼♂️👍 Since one cannot buy a replacement antenna for the hub, (so I’ve been informed by more than just a few folks) it saves buying a entire new system to replace a simple part.
Say- that’s a idea for this company!! “IF” a replacement antenna is not “available”— why not save the customer buying a entire new setup by making one available ? Just sayin’!! 😃🤷🏼♂️
Thank you!
The adhesive tape on the antenna it’s self, the protected film was half off and had little to no adhesive left and it was almost as if it had been used before. The plastic trim piece that comes with the antenna was split and broke in 2 pieces . Instead of wasting my time returning it, I cut a new piece of 3m foam adhesive tape off a roll I already have and mounted it on the antenna and put it on the back window of my truck.
If it weren’t for the fact it arrived jacked up (which I know it may not have been due to how it was packaged but the shipping company it was delivered by) the plastic trim being broke and the adhesive that comes attached being pretty much useless, I would give it 5 stars. Fairly decent product for the price but I will probably order a smaller one in the future and probably a magnet mount.
It does have a high wind resistance at highway speeds.
Just make sure you completely follow the installation instructions:
1 - Keep about 1 1/2 inches from the edge of the glass.
2 - Do not place over defrost elements.
3 - Will not work on tinted materials or metal in the glass.
4 - Do not block driver view with the antenna.
5 - The coupling box connector needs to be pointed up or down.
6 - The antenna base needs to be pointed up vertical.
Of particular note is #5. The instructions say the connector on the coupling box must point up or down, so please avoid the temptation to point the connector to the side. Mounting the coupling box sideways, with the antenna pointing up, must not provide for proper "through the glass" capacitive coupling.
I've had a few antennas similar to this TRAM on different cars over the years and they all perform well for wideband scanners. I've never had one come off, flop over, or give me any other problems. They permit you to avoid drilling a hole for an antenna and running coax through your headliner and prevent the inevitable scratches that will result from using a mag mount.
