After reviewing numerous machete reviews on Amazon and YouTube, and ignoring the complaints that the machete blade was not sharp enough or arrived with a scratch (SERIOUSLY????), I decided to give the Tramontina 18 inches a try and I could not be happier.
Quality blade, hardwood handle, right length, excellent balance, nice sheath...and price !!......HAPPY CAMPER ALL THE WAY!
By the way, the sheath is in all probability an Ontario Knife Lightweight Machete Sheath, available here on Amazon for $7.50
For fun and as a project, I made the following changes and as I see it.....improvements:
- With a grinder, file and sand paper, I removed all sharp edges on the handle, widened the grip surface, stained it and coated it with Linseed Oil.
- Removed the front tip of the blade.
To be completed:
- Sharpen the blade
- Force a patina on to the blade (I will use white vinegar and mustard)
PS: The sticker came off with a razor blade and WD-40 in 30 seconds!
Just get it...you know you want and need one! IT'S A DEAL!!
Update: Just raised 3 starts to 4 after using for several hours today because it is such a great machete! It is very well balanced, cuts smoothly and easily, holds an edge well and makes a satisfying "ting" every time you slice through a branch properly, as a machete should. Great value if you are willing to put a little work into it. Get a 1x30" stationary belt grinder. You can use for all your blades.
This one arrived and the blade felt dull, still I went outside and started chopping. This machete sliced through branches and chopped up thicker branches quicker and with more ease than the finely sharpened previously mentioned tactical looking machetes. No chips in the blade and the edge still is strong. Amazing!!
To those that complain about the blade before getting outside and using the machete, do yourself a favor and just get outside to try it before complaining.
I will definitely be buying more of these as gifts in the future.
