Author Harper calls upon a wide variety to authors, including Alice Bailey, Jacob Boehme, Richard Bucke, Carlos Castaneda, Deepak Chopra, Larry Dossey, Albert Einstein, Stan Grof, Graham Hancock, Aldous Huxley, Carl Jung, Charles Lindbergh, John Mack, Raymond Moody, Michael Morse, Oliver Lodge, Kenneth Ring, Gary Schwartz, Ian Stevenson, Ken Wilber, and scores of others in piecing together the very complex puzzle of consciousness and the meaning of life. He adds in his own mysical experiences and observations. The picture that emerges will be an abstract one for most people, but there are many smaller images within the full picture that are easily discerned.

Good topic, poor writing style

I am a longtime student and practitioner of the type of material covered in this book. While the author does highlight some good nuggets of information pulled from the research of other people, in general I found it to be way too disjointed. It seemed like every page had several references to other works and this constant referencing really distracted from the points the author was trying to make. Also, for me personally, there were far too many things presented as "truth" and not enough encouragement of the reader to think and investigate for themselves. If you do get this book, get it as a reference compilation on topics like: enlightenment, shamanism, ancient cultures (mayan, egyptian), and near death experiences. Its best use for me would have been to skim through and see if any of the topics were of interest and then go off and get the source works the author refers to. I do not recommend reading it cover to cover.

A Coast to Coast Phenom

First of all, the reason this book has sold so well, and the reason there are so many reviews here, is because of the author's multiple guest spots on Coast to Coast AM (para-meta-conspiracy, alternative radio), of which I am a long time listener. This is my kind of book, I was more than willing to eat it up. But what I experienced was one of the most poorly written, poorly edited smorgasbords of loosely related material with constant, almost paranoiac, reference to the work of others, that I found it almost unreadable. I mean I had to put that puppy down for a while until I again had the fortitude to continue. By the time I finished it,... weeks,... there was nothing about it I carried away with me. No inspiration, no follow-up based on the voluminous reference material,.... nothing. I actually think he ended up ruining all his stuff for me. Anyway, if you want my suggestion, if you want spiritual, related to 2012, new age, etc., try David Wilcock and James Gilliland. If you want armchair compilation experts, try to find someone who can write. You will, there are many.

Interesting read, its full of interesting ideas about how we view ourselves and the world in which we live. I agree with him that what we see out in space is a reflection of who or what we are. The Bible and other books of wisdom are really teaching the same thing, only that what has come down to us have been simplyfied and waterd down to where it becomes too confusing to the average seeker, the author is right that science will be the tool that will prove many of what we've wondered about God and the meaning of life. This book is also full of reference to other works by other people where at times I wondered if thats the format he originally wanted to convey.

Poor logic leads to false conclusions

When you take a few factoids and mix them with a large number of myths, religious dogmas and self-proclaimed prophecies, you have very little chance of reaching a valid conclusion. If you add to this jumbled mixture a writing style that is terribly disjointed and textual quotations that are taken out of the context they were originally written in, you have a cacophony of irrational thoughts mixed with a few rational concepts. Because of this poor logic, the author then found himself in the tenous posiiton of making future predictions that are based on the Universal Fear Factor. In order to further validate this position he resorted to a self-proclaimed intellectual, spiritual and emotional superiority over the rest of us. Bunk! A true shaman does not need to impress others with his/her personal prowess. He/she simply lives out a quiet life of Truth and wisdom gently urging others to do the same.

None of us knows what will happen in our lives tomorrow let alone in the year 2012. Instead, let us all learn like we will live forever and live like we will die tomorrow. 2012 and the years thereafter will then take care of themselves as they were meant to.
