Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The Web site for this sassy collection says that Mallratte and graphic novelist Steve Lafler (Bughouse, 2000; Baja, 2002; Scalawag, 2005; 40 Hour Man, 2006) have never been seen together. Yet they share the book’s copyright. Say, you don’t suppose . . . ? Well, anyway, the lead story, “Drunken Lady,” discloses that Fiona is actually a guy named Pete, who, as a preschooler, discovered a passion for wearing women’s clothing that he describes with shameless delight and augments with a four-page transvestite-superhero coda. Next up are four photos of Fiona in her finest, with captions including thanks to “my generous, understanding wife.” As for the other three stories, “Jimmie Ogler, Supergal’s Slave” is a fan-boy heart-warmer if ever there was one; “Halloween Mash-Up” shows a tranny’s night out, complete with wolf; and the long, ludicrous, but hip “Cat Suit” is a non-cross-dressing costume caper with a transvestite sting at the end. The black-and-white art (sure looks like Lafler’s cartoony urban realism) complements the campy dialogue mahhhvelously, dahling. --Ray Olson

By R. A. Gladman on December 7, 2008
Format: Paperback
A very unusual book, this is a collection of short comic strips based around cross-dressing, with all the lead characters being transvestites or having some form of cross-dressing urges. It certainly comes across as somewhat autobiographical and perhaps with an element of "wish fullfillment" by the author.
The artwork is quite nice to look at and you can tell that as well as their love of women's clothing, there is also a fondness for superhero comics and sci-fi television and movies. Look closely and you'll see the tributes to Dr Who and Star Trek hidden away in the pictures.
The downside is that despite being mildly amusing, the stories don't really go anywhere and lack any real depth. However, it's a fun little book and might make a nice Xmas present for a more open-minded relative or friend.
