This boric is a pure, fine powder, very high quality in my experience, and actually works better than the prescriptions I was given because there are not fillers—it’s 100% boric acid. It also works far better and faster than probiotic supplements and PH gels—and at a fraction of the cost.
Here is what I've read and how I use it: For active infections, insert vaginally one capsule at night for seven nights or until infection is gone. Discontinue use if any side effects occur. For maintenance, insert vaginally one capsule three times per week or as needed. I have heard from women who use more capsules more frequently to their satisfaction, such as two capsules instead of one.
HOW IT WORKS:
Here’s how medical researchers tell us boric acid works, by the way (you can Google “boric acid for bv infection—and see the research by The University of Maryland and others). The vagina has a PH of about 3.5, which means it’s on the acidic side, and that’s how it stays clean of infections. However, so many things we do upset that acid balance. For example, lye soap has a PH of 14 (the other extreme end of the PH scale) and sperm has a PH of 7, all of which can instantly cause bacteria to proliferate, causing odor, etc. Other products do the same. It only takes seconds for bacteria to enter and proliferate. Boric acid keeps the acid levels high enough to kill infection and keep a healthy vaginal environment.
I have read that this treatment is for vaginal suppository only--DO NOT TAKE ORALLY. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
A women’s studies side note: It’s remarkable that this remedy was not studied until recently--because there was very little funding nationwide to study women’s medical issues until the mid 1990’s. This was just considered to be a “woman’s problem.” Another home remedy that women have historically used is vinegar douches (using 1 part white distilled vinegar to 10 parts distilled water). They’re just not as strong and long-lasting as these suppositories, in my experience, and they haven’t been studied very extensively yet (even though women have been using them for centuries). Currently, the concern is that vinegar douches might “chase” bacteria upward, which would mean toward the cervix, before killing it all. The risks are unknown at this time based on the research I have read.
So, there’s that caveat: a lot more research needs to be done on this ancient women’s problem that probably should have been solved long ago. ' Meanwhile, if you're going to go the boric acid direction, I highly recommend this brand of boric acid as a quality product. Please add any other information you might have on this topic so that we can all help one another out. --Best, Juliet
