This is Part one of a four-part series that could have been written for Air Wonder Stories in the 1930's. This story takes place c1937 in an alternate history where "sub-atomics" were discovered much earlier and developed into much more practical things outside of bombs. Light-hearted. Pulpish. And full of show-business names of the late '30's the series promises to be a lot of fun.
This review covers only Part One of the story/series.

The story begins with an air race, something common at least in the early thirties. Our female protagonist is the leader of the American entry, a colossal machine, more like a rocketship than a monoplane. And then the Germans come with their entry, a sub-atomic rocket as well. This will make for an interesting race. But a surprise attack in South America from an unknown enemy means both Americans and Germans must come to the rescue.

We have some non-tradition female characters, including a deaf female engineer, proficient in lip reading. So the story tries to be ambitious and break out of the box, character-wise. I hope there is some more character development in the chapters to come.

The structure is similar to the old Saturday matinee serials which ran for 15-30 minues a chapter and ended in a chiff-hanger.
The thing about those old serials, there were short bursts of dialog interrupted by lots of action. There wasn't a lot of explanation for things, unless it fell in bits and pieces during the chapters. Here, the dialog is much longer and more detailed. MUCH more detailed. The action comes toward the end of the chapter after the characters are finished standing around, and we understand the relationship between everybody. Very nice and social, but I was hoping for more action.

I am a dedicated fan of the pulp genre and this series hits the spot. If you liked the indiana jones movies, rocketeer and the shadow you should try this series.Duane seems to have hit just the right note with plenty of action, engaging characters and some fantastic ideas.

The writing and grammar were okay. It sounded like something I would enjoy. Unfortunately, the book just didn't hold my interest enough in the beginning to keep reading it. Maybe it is just me, but I would suggest more of a "hook" for future stories.
