Trans: When Ideology Meets Reality Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.7 out of 5 stars 2,578 ratings

The instant Sunday Times best seller

"An intelligent, thorough rejoinder to an idea that has swept across much of the liberal world seemingly overnight. Even those outraged by Joyce’s positions would benefit from understanding them.... Open conversation about such fraught issues is the only realistic path forward." (Jesse Singal, The New York Times)

"This rigorous and brave book nails the absurd idea that sex is just a 'social construct'." (David Aaronovitch, The Times)

Gender identity ideology is about more than Twitter storms and using the right pronouns. In just 10 years, laws, company policies, school and university curricula, sport, medical protocols, and the media have been reshaped to privilege self-declared gender identity over biological sex.

People are being shamed and silenced for attempting to understand the consequences of redefining "man" and "woman". While compassion for transgender lives is well-intentioned, it is stifling much-needed inquiry into the significance of our bodies.

If we recommit to our liberal values of freedom of belief, freedom of speech, and robust debate, we scan de-escalate this most vicious of culture wars.

Ideas have consequences…children are being manipulated and damaged.
While Helen Joyce has received so much backlash for this book, I find it hard for someone to argue her intents were in any way malicious. Her book is well written, supported by research data and above all, her voice came about BECAUSE of the trauma that detransitioners experienced. “Once you have seen that, it is hard to look away”. As someone who has experienced literal birth/bodily trauma, I can relate to the betrayal one can feel when something goes wrong - you cannot undo that trauma. It is damaging psychologically, emotionally and physically. I cannot fathom what they have experienced. Many people these days are ready to jump at the chance to be a “social justice warrior” without any insight to weigh both sides fully to make an intellectual assessment. You can be a supportive and loving person to all people and still not approve of medical transition for those who identify as “trans”. This is experimental medicine at best, and to take advantage of our youth and fast track them to medical and surgical transition is a violation of the Hippocratic Oath. Bravo, Helen Joyce! We hear you, we see you, and we thank you for speaking up for those who feel silenced. Especially for speaking up for those who have suffered the most.

A real eye opener in the subject of trans processes, history, politics, science, abuse and much more. I’m sure the author got immense abuse for writing this book and it’s immediately obvious she has great knowledge and expertise on this whole unfortunate topic, particularly when it comes to the abuse of children. Indoctrination is a terrible thing, particularly when it is deliberate and so destructive to its victims. To represent the methods and means as something irreversible when it is clearly NOT, is unforgivable. And to do it out of greed makes it even more vicious toward those who buy into it. Everyone should read this book and learn.

The author believes, and makes a clear case, that women's rights are threatened by the dominant trans advocacy that eliminates the biological definition of sex. She also notes the harmful impacts to other groups. Simultaneously, she has compassion for those with genuine gender disphoria who have transitioned and wish to simply go about their lives. The different camps and players are exposed with evidence and examples. Excellent contribution to the discussion.

As a left leaning person, in the last year I have become deeply troubled by the new "truth" claims of the transgender movement. Once I realized that medical transition can result in sterilization - to name the most shocking result, there are other negatives - it quickly dawned on me that what I had thought was trans civil rights was actually a medical experiment on vulnerable (and possibly gay or lesbian) youth. Wow - talk about a mix up. No minor should be able to sign a consent form to accept sterilization. This is textbook the path to hell is paved by good intentions.

This book illuminates many aspects of this movement with a page turning style into a debate play book - meaning breaking down arguments one by one and really exposing them logically, rationally, step by step.

I truly believe, and hope, that we will look back in 5-10 years at this moment and shake our heads that we mistook civil rights for medical misconduct - I'm not "anti-trans", I am pro-healthy person! I only hope we change because less people will be medically harmed.

To any transgender person out there, young or old, I wish you a life with peace and medical health. And I hope you can appreciate the depth of meaning in Joyce's pushback against the notion of legal self-ID - as she paints a very rational picture of how that idea does not scale. I think there are ways to live peacefully together without harming any one of us - and Joyce provides many work arounds to this end toward the end of her book regarding single sex spaces.

Highly recommended! If you are as interested in this subject as I am, you won't be able to put it down.

I picked this book on sale as I was interested in reading more about the trans viewpoint. I originally thought this was pro trans, but that isn't exactly accurate. It's a good book explaining trans but also other reasons why it should not be bought hook line and sinker. As an lgbtq+ ally, I have felt that it needs a slower move for trans to allow the general population to become more welcoming rather than going too fast and causing others to put a wall up rather than listen. This book did a good job of pointing out issues that arise from being too quick and obstacles to overcome to make it better. I am happy I read this and hope it isn't viewed as a negative book instead of a positive thought book.

I came away from this book with a couple very important points that this book highlights.

The first is that the current gender identity movement evolved out of the feminist movement and now largely overshadows said movement. It threatens the very core of that movement and destroys and trivializes the many accomplishments that biological women have achieved up to this point. It also endangers biological women by ignoring that there are indeed physical differences between the biological sexes, and women are the ones who largely suffer from the violent end of these physical differences, hence why we have bathrooms intended for females and gyms, prisons, etc.

The second important take I got from this book is concerning underlying mental disorders connected to gender dysphoria. It's interesting that we are now taking coming of age issues that young folks face in life and channeling them into a gender identity crisis. As the author clearly points out, these issues largely resolve in early adulthood, hence why the studies show that an overwhelming number of people who were likely to surgical change sex in childhood changed their mind in adulthood. It highlights an important underlying psychological issue that we are failing to address and any opposing view is quickly shot down.

This book is an important read in a time where we need sane voices to speak out. Especially biological women.

For a short time I knew a woman who was a lot older than me. She was friendly and welcoming, as well as educated and clever. Her husband was one of the gentlest men I’ve known.

They didn’t have kids because of the savage, unwarranted, brutality she had suffered at the hands of nazis in the 1940s.

After reading this important, and sometimes horrifying, book, I now know that this savage brutality continues today.

It is carried out by a few groups of people: medical staff; parents; activists backed by powerful and rich people.

I understand the medical staff: they can make a lot of money out of this work. The powerful and rich can enjoy whatever perversions take their fancy.

How do parents justify sterilizing, drugging and damaging the futures of their own kids?

Read this book and find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars When ideology becomes a religion
Reviewed in Italy on January 8, 2025
The book is highly recommended to anyone wanting to understand how trans ideology has run amok and threatens the rights and safety of the very people it is suppose to protect. By pushing the extremist ideology ideas like biology is irrelevant, gender is simply a social cultural construction that can be re-defined by anyone at anytime via gender self-identification, by insisting on 128 different genders, by insisting on dozens of new pronouns, by trying to re-define biology itself, these trans extremists have become their own worst enemies. They needed to focus on equal rights and equal protection under the law, not trying to brain wash everyone on their ideology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Common Sense At Last
Reviewed in Canada on August 8, 2022
This author makes so much sense. Common sense! She clearly states things that most people know to be true. However, many are bullied into either being silent or with going along with this anti scientific farce.
It is not about being "Trans", the whole movement is about trans "activism", and that it quite a different thing. My biggest concern with this movement is its effect on children, especially young girls. We need, above all, to protect children, women and gays from this ideology. Women need women only spaces, children need to be left alone and free of ideology and gay children should NOT be declared "trans" and set on a path to transition.
This book was a real eye opener for me . I think we have allowed a certain group, "activists" to hijack this debate, it is time that cooler heads and facts prevailed.
i highly recommend this book, it throws a lot of light on this subject, and does so whilst being respectful of actual trans people.
