Another advantage of Thunderbolt over USB 3.0 (but not over eSATA) is that it can support TRIM operations that allow the OS to tell the disk which blocks it can release. But TRIM isn't enabled by default for this drive, and I'm not sure it offers support for it (couldn't find anything on the Transcend website mentioning either TRIM or whatever garbage collection they implement), so this is at best a potential advantage, not a practical one.
If I had any complaint, it's only that it would be nice if it were smaller. I have a very nice 256GB USB 3.0 SSD from Freecom (the mSSD) that's a lot smaller. But it's "only" USB 3.0, and so not as fast. But I can easily put it in a pocket with other stuff, like keys, loose change, etc. This drive is pretty compact, but I wonder if it couldn't have been a bit smaller (obviously not with a 2.5" format drive, of course).
In any case, it's the only affordable SSD with a Thunderbolt interface. Looks great, runs great.
Setup was easy, just plug it in with thunderbolt cable. Then I basically cloned my main OS X boot drive to it using a free tool - carbon copy cloner I think, set it as the boot drive, and rebooted. The boot up time was immensely faster. It now gets to the login screen in like 5-10 seconds, and fully booted to the desktop in another 5-10 seconds. This is compared to up to a couple of minutes previously. Write and read speeds are very good in the 300-400 range.
Now, I didn't know what to expect in terms of how much this would speedup my computer, since its a file storage device not a computing device, but I was pleasantly surprised. For example, you might not think it would speed up internet browsing but it sure does.... safari is able to download and store files much faster. It's able to update caches and retrieve history and all that much faster. Apps also load and open almost instantly. At first it feels like you're cheating, as though all the apps are loaded from memory or something instead of from disk. Everything just opens so fast. Anything to do with files is way faster. e.g. opening a Finder window and going to my applications folder, it used to take several seconds to assemble all the icons etc and actually finish updating the display, now it seems almost instantaneous. I also use some larger software which takes a long time to load and it now loads very quickly. I did not realize, overall, just how much the hard drive was holding back the performance. If you have an older iMac, this is definitely a huge upgrade on performance for you.
Occasionally I've been getting some temporary 'freezes' where the mouse cursor spins and things seem inoperable, as though *perhaps* the SSD is stuck or waiting to retrieve data or something... then it unsticks. I'm not sure if that's SSD related but it only started happening since the upgrade. Hopefully it won't be something that happens more frequently.
Once installed and I was happy with the reliability and performance, I decided to wipe most of my original boot drive and turn it into a time machine backup. Since it's inside the computer and always 'on' it makes it a natural choice for creating backups of the SSD. You know, just in case.
Overall very happy with this, I recommend it. I would not go with the USB option, it's much slower.
The fusion drive on the old Mac didn't act like a part SSD and was acting just like I'd expect a 5400 rpm HDD to
Loading the OS externally in this made it function like a new iMac ( opening her up for an SSD change was too daunting, and I didn't want to add internal hardware in case I dump the Mac after sometime, this I can reuse for years)
I think the thunderbolt 2?connection helps, plus I had two unused ports, all my USB ports are used
Highly recommended for this purpose
