Reason I gave 3 stars is because it comes with Pros and Cons, and I think here in my case cons have outweighed pros.

My laptop: T520
My external hard drive: Seagate 4TB USB 3.0

Pro:
1.Write/read speed boost after using this adapter, from originally, when connected using laptop's USB 2.0 slot, 23.06MB/s/23.96MB/s got boosted into usually around 90MB/s/100MB/s. It's really 4 times faster, and it's TRUE. The picture here I attached got so much faster is because before this test I performed fracture cleansing; usually it CANNOT gets into this fast.

Cons:
1.This adapter can't really got latched into the express card slot; what I am trying to say is that: even though there's a locking mechanism designed by both the laptop and this adapter, this adapter will still come out when you try to pull the hard drive USB cord out. This has to do with the Cons #2, too.

2.The 2 USB slots in this adapter is REALLY REALLY REALLY tight, and you CANNOT really pull the hard drive USB cord out UNLESS you really use some strength. This is why if you are not holding the adapter when you try to pull the USB cord out, the adapter will come out at the same time. My solution to this is to let the USB cord sits there forever, every time I am done using the external hard drive, I would just pull the adapter out instead of the USB cord; which is not my original picture before I purchased it. I was imagining that the adapter could sit tight forever as part of a hardware of the laptop, and this has to do with Cons #3, too.

3.I don't know if this has something to do with my laptop's mother board or the software of the adapter. When I detach the hard drive from the adapter while the adapter remains connected with my laptop, I can't get my hard drive work again after I connect the hard drive back to the adapter. And at the same time when I reconnect my hard drive back to the adapter, the whole system starts lagging. If at this moment I am playing music on my laptop, the music starts lagging too.

Summary:
To me, 1 pro and 3 cons is fine; because speed is my main purpose of buying this. Faster speed compensates the other drawbacks. Also, it's just like 20 dollar in total.

Good Product, Poor software availability

This item was bought to replace a faulty USB 3 plug on a laptop utilized in a extensive auto cad program for fabricating items for other companies. It performed very well once set up. However, acquiring the drivers for this item was quite difficult. The drivers were not included and the web sites we were sent to were either no longer active or did not contain the right driver for this particular card. I would suggest that either a driver disc be included or improved directions for a web site to get the driver be included. This is a good item from the standpoint of increased demand for USB 3 sockets on labtops. This customer is utilizing 2 very large external hard drives to facilitate utilizing their extensive auto cad program. Very good product, poor application of drivers. I would buy again with no doubt as to its quality and application.

Worked as advertised

Pros:
If you need USB 3.0 speed on an aging laptop - this is way to go. Worked as soon as I had it plugged in.
Cons:
Its a bit cumbersome as it occupies a regular USB to power it and on my Lenovo Ideapad it blocked 2 other USB ports - as a result I lost 3 USB 2.0 ports to gain 2 faster ones. So I would advise checking the location of the expresscard slot beforehand.

Great way to surpass usb2 limit on older laptop

I bought this to use with me legacy Acer laptop that has the old standard PCMIA Slots that I wasn't using and a few usb2 ports. The goal was to increase data transfer with this card relative to usb2. It works great, adding two higher-speed USB ports.

Be sure to check your PCMIA slot. This card requires the NARROW slot. Some older PCMIA slots support only the wide PCMIA devices. My Acer 5230 actually supports both widths; it has two slots.

I haven't measured the transfer rate with the new ports and what you will achieve may depend on your PC make and model. I'd estimate in my case a factor of at least 5 increase in transfer speed based on the shorter time it now takes me to use my off board Seagate backup drive, which is usb3 of course.

Took a few reboots, but eventually everything is working

I installed this on my Lenovo T410 running Windows 7. Immediately after installing (and possibly after one reboot) it will recharge my cellphone, but it did not work as a USB 3.0 port. I tried a few things, including uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers without success. I was going to give up on it, but on next reboot, everything worked perfectly. I connected a USB 3.0 external display adapter to it which works flawlessly.

If your devices don't draw much power, the power cord to draw power from another USB port does not need to be connected.

works for win 7 not win 8

Worked on same laptop for win 7. Upgraded to win 8 and device driver software did not work. Loaded the drivers for it again still did not work. Uninstalled it and let win 8 load the drivers. Still nothing. Reimaged lc to win 7 and it worked. Plan on returning it for different product that is win 8 compatible.

I have had a lot of trouble and inconsistent performance ...

I have had a lot of trouble and inconsistent performance from this product over time. Part of it is s/w drivers but part of it is the USB connectors seem to have degraded a lot over time.

I will not buy another TRANSCEND product.

Amazon should drop the line.

Doesn't work for me, not on Windows or Linux

Appears to be well made, but Windows doesn't detect it. Tried over an hour, having installed the driver and carefully following all instructions and troubleshooting instructions. Also tried it on 2 versions of Linux (Mageia 4 and the latest SystemRescueCD, which normally has excellent hardware detection).
