"Dr. Norman Rosenthal's Transcendence is the best-ever book on Transcendental Meditation: Accessible and substantive, engaging and scientific, practical and profound. A very enjoyable read that can change your life, for good."
"I have been meditating for over 10 years, and I found Transcendence to be a uniquely compelling introduction to the art and science of Transcendental Meditation. Dr. Norman Rosenthal's book will propel TM into the mainstream where it belongs."
"Whether your troubles are deep or you simply know life could be better and happier, read this book."
—Candy Crowley, CNN anchor
“One of the striking features of this book is the empowering empathy with which Dr. Norman Rosenthal discusses the people with given health issues. It cannot but make the reader become more understanding of other humans and their anguish. In addition, there is all the neat science – explained simply yet not watered down to the degree of becoming trivial. Essentially, this is book about human condition in the modern world. But unlike the existentialists, Dr. Norman Rosenthal sees light at the end of the tunnel.”
“The book makes a useful contribution to understanding the mind-body relationship in holistic ways, advancing ongoing dialogue among clinicians and just plain folks about how to live more healthfully.”

Rosenthal recommends learning by enrolling in a TM course with an instructor. It is pricey, but there are thousands upon thousands of people who have found it the best investment they have ever made. I cannot speak to that because I did not have the money to go that route.
I learned meditation from two wonderful instructors via their audio programs: Shinzen Young and Patricia Carrington. I have been using TM for 15 years and intend to continue for life.
In summation, if you are a beginner, here are the introductions to the technique of meditation with instruction that I used and I recommend:
1-"Learn to Meditate Kit: The Complete Course in Modern Meditation" by Patricia Carrington, available on Amazon
This consists of a book and 4 cassette tapes. If you do not have a cassette tape player, I believe the program is available on CD at her website. You can google that. She calls her system "clinically standardized meditation" but it is TM.
I also used and recommend the addition of Ms. Carrington's larger book, The Book of Meditation, available on Amazon. It expands on the information, research, and case studies, and offers additional ways to use TM.
2. The Science of Enlightenment by Shinzen Young, available on Amazon
This is the second course I used, an audio course and a bit pricey but still much cheaper than taking the official TM course and it is broader. It gives an overview of not only TM but many additional forms of meditation and the benefits to be gained. Two of the CD's are meditation instruction.
Perhaps the physiological documentation can be tedious for those not "science oriented" but for the most part can be glossed over if that is the case.
Overall, well documented, edited, and balanced with thoughts from initial skeptics.
4 stars for being accessible, well written, interesting, and informative. The book was recommended by a TM teacher and I put off listening to the book. It doesn't teach you how to Meditation in the TM method and I looked on Amazon, and there appears none that do. (They're pretty clear during instruction that you do NOT talk about the teachings!). I'm guessing people would be in trouble if they published a book as such. The first rule of TM is you don't talk about TM. I shouldn't even be saying this. ;)
I bought this on audiobook and ebook and I listened to it on my smartphone (android). I opened the book up on my pc (via Kindle app.) and it had synced to the last bookmark I placed. Inspiring, so I went back to sit and try TM again. It helps. I just wish everyone could learn it for free! Students of University or College of any kind do get a discount, though.
I particularly liked the account of several gentlemen who describe their reluctance to try this seemingly "out there" technique. Their skepticism and then endorsement of the technique mirrors my own skepticism of the induction process and helps to explain (a little) what is going on during your induction into TM. Hope this method helps even more vets. For other titles in the genre I also recommend these: Meditation for Busy PeopleNag Champa Incense Sticks 100 gms

Everyone should learn TM - this book is an excellent place to start if you are considering it.
