Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, and instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise. The way the male character thinks is unbelievable. For example, he shouldn't know what the color 'pink' is- but he describes her bra as the color pink. Not the color of a specific flower that he saw on his last hunt. He is desperate to please Beth. Doesn't force sex on her even when he is about to take the plunge.
The dude is a caveman. Hunt. Eat. Sleep. Throw in sex and some male monkey-like posturing. But the need to make his mate happy?? Are you kidding me. That. Would. Never. Happen.
How Beth gets there? That. Would. Never. Happen.
The thoughts that go through his head (we only have his POV the whole book). Again, Unbelievable.
So why why why did I enjoy reading this book? Once I checked my brain at the door - it was so gloriously romantic and sweet. The day to day activities of survival and the growth of love and trust b/w the two characters is so well written and incredibly sweet. He embraces the romantic hero (without being a caveman = alpha male = over domineering) In fact, he's the opposite.
Again, remember to check your brain at the door. Just read with your heart and your need for a fantastical story. The romance was in the details. Am very excited to read another book by this author. Can see the possibility of another fantastical book that may be over the top. But am completely willing to take that risk because of the amazing details, 4-D descriptions of the characters and their emotions. it will be worth the ride.
The title for this book soooo completely fitting. It's romance but with so many barriers. Language being the most prevalent. He's a freaking caveman he can't speak other then grunts !!! Here's the thing though and what stood out for me when it comes to love, compassion, protectiveness basic human instincts barriers don't mean squat. Barriers can be overcome and this book makes you think.
My heart I don't even know what I feel so many things at this point. I truly fell for Edh, he made my heart ache, he made my heart swoon. All with his actions. Gah I can't even think of what else to say here because I am still processing this book. I am not sure I will ever forget this book and I am certain that I will reread it.
If you are willing to try something different yet still want a romance that is really told in its purest form. Then I definitely recommend this book. It will make you think long after you have finished it. When I finished I put the book down and the first word I could think of was HOH !!! You will understand why when you read the book.
Originally I was only going to give this book 3 stars but after I finished it I couldn't stop thinking about the endinging. I loved the ending so much!
Where to start.... Transcendence follows the life of a caveman and his mate. Ehd is a caveman or neanderthal who stumbles across a girl Beh in one of his traps one day. Beh is not from that time so she's scared and confused. This book follows their life together and watches how they overcome obstacles throughout time. Such as language barriers and different hardships life throws in their way. This story was really good, I really enjoyed Ehd alot. He's such a sweet guy who only wanted to do his best to provide the best life he could for Beh. The story is told all in Ehds POV and is so funny, watching him and Beh trying to communicate is hilarious. They just don't understand eachother.
I also loved how sweet this story is. Watching the love grow between Ehd and Beh was beautiful. They truly loved eachother for who they were despite the obvious difference.
Now the only thing I didn't like was that Ehd wasn't fully able to learn language. Yes I know he's a caveman they don't have the ability to do that, but still that would have been nice. The other thing I wished was that we had Behs POV I think it really needed that. I would have loved to know what she was saying and thinking the entire time.
Over all the book was cute and I would recommend it and even read it again.
