Set on post-apocalyptic Earth, this story continues the battle between the Pyros and fiends (an alien race, which has managed to bridge to Earth and is trying to over take it). The fantasy and scene descriptions are amazing, drawing the reader into a landscape on the brink of destruction. Although this is told from Cas's point of view, there's a broad span of characters, each with their own personalities and stories.
Cas is a kick-butt kind of heroine, who's more slid into her role and is trying to handle it as best she can. She's a true heroine, and despite self-doubt, accepts the responsibility for what she needs to do. Her plans are a bit spontaneous and her attitude shoves all others to the side, but there's enough softness in her to make her easy to like.
The writing held my attention the entire way through--simply one of those reads that's fun to sit down with and take the ride. Only the ending rushed over a bit faster than I would have liked. But this is still a great read for those battle with monster fans who love strong heroines and great fight scenes. As said, it's simply a joy to read and get lost in the pages.
I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
However, the "protagonist has been written into a corner there appears no easy way out of, then gets knocked unconscious and wakes to discover the plot has moved on" was interesting the first time or two, but by this book is feeling like a hackneyed crutch to fall back on. I found myself going "interesting development! Or is it ... yes, she's out again. *sigh*"
This was just about the perfect ending to the trilogy. It has everything you want: action galore, a heroine that has faults but mostly just cares about everyone and and great ending.
I can't even begin to do justice to this book in a review, there are just so many things tied up neatly in this book.
I can honestly say that I recommend this book and the whole trilogy without any hesitation to anyone who is looking for something fun to read.
I don't normally read dystopian stories, but after reading this trilogy, I might have to start.
