Clare Noir's life was on the line, her only concern was that her daughter Tessa made it out before her monster of a husband killed her as well. She knew Roman and Elisabeth LeBlanc would take care of Tessa and keep her safe. Her fate was already determined the day she married Walter Noir.
Rather than dying, she's saved by Agent Heath Light, a man she knew as Luke Crossgrove, her trainer at the gym. The DEA is trying to take down Walter Noir's organization and put the man behind bars.
Walter Noir escaped arrest. He's gunning for his wife and daughter. Nobody takes what is his. He will take down the LeBlancs, Agent Heath Light, and the DEA. He may have tried to play God when his daughter was conceived, but she's his no matter what the DNA tests say. Clare was his the moment he saw her in the all night diner. No one will touch her except him. He will determine whether she lives or dies.
I was glued to the pages. Aly Martinez kept me on the edge of my seat. The suspense, the passion, and family bonds were the glue that made two separate love stories so powerful. I highly recommend The Retrieval Duet by Aly Martinez.
All of the questions left unanswered in Retrieval are tied up in Transfer. So much information had been brought to light in that book, but there were still so many things that needed to play out and I was trying so hard to read slowly so that I didn't miss anything but at the same time rushing through the pages because I had to know!! Was Clare finally going to get away from Walter? How was she going to take the news that Luke was really Heath Light, super alpha male DEA agent? What would the DNA reveal about who Tessa's biological parents were?
Since I mentioned Heath up above, lets take a minute to talk about him. I thought that Roman was super alpha in Retrieval. A stubborn, headstrong man who steamrolled over those whose opinion didn't match his, but at the same time gentle, loving and obsessed with Elisabeth. Well Heath Light? Yeah, he's like 10 times more super alpha, headstrong and stubborn than Roman! Poor Clare! All I kept thinking was I hope she holds on tight because she's in for the ride of her life with that guy! But as dominating has Heath was, he was the most patient, tolerant, saint like man I've seen in a book in a very long time. He always knew exactly what Clare needed and stopped the world to give it to her.
Tessa, sweet little Tessa!! She stole my heart all over again! She's seen and heard way too much in her tiny little life and Heath did everything he could to show her that what she had experienced wasn't the norm and that she would never have to see anything like that again. It is always heartwarming to see these huge, intimidating men brought to their knees by the innocence and love of a child.
Aly stuffed this book chock full of emotion from all four of the characters. While this was Heath and Clare's story, Roman and Elisabeth are immersed right into the middle of the whole thing, because Walter Noir changed all of their lives irrevocably. Blood doesn't always make you family and that is absolutely the case in this story. Family is who you make it, and these four people forge one of the closest family units there could be.
I loved, loved, loved the conclusion of this story!! Perfection, Aly!!
I LOVED THIS SERIES! So much, in fact, I want to do a reread right now.
Good grief, this author knows how to pull the tears from my soul! She manipulates my feelings and plays with my heart, ripping it out of my chest and tosses it around for good measure. I know she laughs the entire time, too (because she's an evil genius). My chest still aches. I must be a sadist because I loved every minute of it.
I am going to review this as the duet, rather than each book. Partly because I didn't stop to absorb the first book, Retrieval before I dove into Transfer but mostly because I can't separate the story in my head.
One story. Two couples.
Roman and Elizabeth, Heath and Claire. One couple is torn apart by their fertility journey another brought together by a marriage torn apart at the hands of a mad man. All four are intertwined by a web of lies.
This story was original. It is not often these days that I can say that about a book. I've read so many that, unfortunately, the only thing different about some books is the name of the characters. With The Retrieval duet, Martinez reminded me why I love reading. I was wholly invested in these characters and totally captivated by her storytelling. (This is nothing new for me, though, what held true in 2015 holds true today, read about that here Authors I'm Crushing On and Why.)
This duet was about unconditional love, a love so pure and so true, you will feel it to your core. It was also about survival, both in marriage and in life. It was about living. It was utter perfection!
