From the Author
This book of Christian plays started with a weekly series of soup suppers put on during Lent by an ecumenical group of churches in my community. Each meal was followed by a half-hour program dramatizing how a different contemporary of Jesus Christ was transformed by His resurrection. For the two programs hosted by my home church, I wrote and produced the dramatic comedy "Simon Peter, Transformed" and the highly dramatic monologue "Mary Magdalene, Transformed." I later wrote the three additional one-act plays and added original songs for Mary Magdalene to create a collection of church plays for Lent or Easter, or any time of year.
Each play is a standalone piece. I've even presented John's monologue in lieu of sermon and scripture reading at worship services. But all five together give the audience a sense of the intertwined lives of these characters, who were, after all, real people. The mix of drama/comedy, musical/nonmusical, monologue/ensemble, male/female leads, and Biblical/comtemporary settings keeps the shows fresh and entertaining. And if you feed your audience first, as my local churches did, you've got a winning series of evening programs!
