What's sooo really wrong with this movie guys? Some even complain about the movie title. 'Age of Extinction' sounds dumb to you? 'The Force Awakens' sounds dumber to me.I cannot believe how such a forceful rehash like Episode VII is so much praised by the media while T4 has been widely panned by many a critic and not-so-critic.I think they just do not like Michael Bay for one reason or another.Complainig about storytelling or character development or whatever? Enough. Of course there are some issues with the movie itself but this is a Transformers installment and it just delivers a hell of an entertainment.Well shot, well directed, well acted, action packed, with a nice cast portraying equally nice characters, nice CGI, nice photography, nice soundtrack, nice sound mixing....I could only possibly complain about the following:1. I did feel I was kind of watching the same movie all over again. All 4 movies are not really that different from each other in the end... but, you know, every episode of the original animated series was also basically the same thing.2. Too much product placement in this movie. Chinese namely. Sometimes it was just like sitting trough a plain TV commercial.

What I enjoyed about this movie is the action sequences. They have been exciting and fun to watch in all of the movies. It's giant robots fighting in HD, so it's hard to go wrong there.

However, there are several things that could be improved upon. The first is what spoiled the movie for me the most, which is the unoriginal story. Why does there always have to be a damsel in distress in every transformers movie? Why is she constantly getting rescued, only to play a pivotal role in the very end where the good guys wouldn't win if she wasn't there? All four movies have been the same in this regard, there's a hot girl that likes the nerd, she is getting in trouble a lot but she has this independent attitude where she's going to do what she wants, and in the end she has a eureka moment that ends up saving the Earth. I'm tired of seeing this four times in a row now.

Furthermore, I'm not very excited to see a cheesy, stereotypical love story in a movie about giant robots. Almost every romance in a movie has the same nuances (e.g., James Bond), and I'm tired of it. I'm sure the majority of the people that watch these movies get some subtle enjoyment out of watching the good guy get the girl, but I don't. I paid to watch giant robots fight each other, not to see a melodramatic romantic comedy embedded in every scene. I'm guessing that there has been a new female actress in every movie because they ask for twice as much as what they got last time, and they don't care so they just hire someone else.

Third, while watching the Transformers movies I have always sat there wondering why they bother giving humans leading roles. Transformers should be about the transformers, they should be the main characters. They try so hard to give the humans any level of significance that it ends up being annoying. Having Marky Mark fend off Lockdown at the end with a sword-that-is-also-a-gun really made me want to stop watching. Lockdown goes around the Universe for centuries capturing the most wanted transformers, he nearly kills Optimus multiple times, and this human is actually winning a fight with him. Give me a break, I don't believe it. They did this in the other 3 movies too, somehow the main character is able to fight off transformers while everyone else is getting picked off left and right (except for the main character's friends, they are impossible to kill too).

Fourth, they really seem to have stopped trying in some of the action sequences. In the scene where the ship they were flying in was shot down, it smashes into the Earth into a giant fireball and tumbles into multiple buildings, and at the end of it all the humans step out of the open cockpit just fine. How were they not killed in the collision? Or the giant fireball? And why were they not thrown from the open cockpit? It's like they said who cares, let's have a big crash scene right here.

Fifth, I was really bothered by the blatant advertising throughout the movie. In one scene they crash into a Bud Light truck, and all of the bottles fly all over the ground. No bottles are smashed or anything, they must have not cared enough to make this part realistic. They end up panning over the bud light bottles for what feels like 5 seconds. For 5 seconds in this movie I'm staring at Bud Light bottles, and they thought this wouldn't be noticeable? Maybe they were forced to add it and they made the scene really crappy on purpose to spite their bosses? And at the end of the scene the hero pops one open and drinks it casually before throwing it on the ground. I wonder how much they paid for that scene. There also seems to be some Asian milk product in a juice box being advertised. I recognize it from the third movie--the milk the guy that gets pushed through a window was drinking. Well, they take 5 more seconds to show the inventor casually sitting in a chair drinking from the same juice box, literally nothing else is happening in the scene. They must be paying a lot for that cameo.

My dream is to have a Transformers movie where there are no humans involved, at least not in anything more than a supporting role. I want to see transformers, I don't want to see terrible acting ruining every movie. I want to learn about the background of the transformers, I don't want a new story conjured up about the humans that is explained in depth in every single movie. Skip the boring first hour of the movie where they introduce the humans and replace it with us learning about the transformers. They just introduce these new transformers in every movie and we don't even learn their names! Why can't their personalities be explored? Why can't we get to know them on the same level as the human main characters? It is a missed opportunity. And if they do make the transformers the main characters, _please_ don't add in a transformer damsel and a love story to go along with it.

So I give it 3/5, and I hope they try harder next time.

Ich habe mich drei Jahre lang seit Teil III von 2011 auf diese Fortsetzung gefreut und ich bin absolut nicht enttäuscht worden!

Wenn man sich die Kritiken hier durchliest, dann merkt man schnell, dass es zwei Sichtweisen gibt:
1. Was für ein Schrott. Zu viel Action, schlechte Story, miese Schauspielleistungen usw.
2. Beste Popcorn Kinounterhaltung.

Eine mittlere Bewertung findet man eher selten.

Ich gehöre eindeutig zur zweiten Gruppe und habe mir den Film bisher seit Kinostart drei Mal angesehen (IMAX-3D und 2D auf Deutsch und 3D in der Originalversion).
Ich bin absolut begeistert. Der Film hat mir die beste Kino - Erfahrung gegeben, die ich je hatte. Er war JEDEN verdammten Cent wert. Danke dafür!

Ich habe Verständnis dafür, dass sich gehobene Kino-Ansprüche von einigen Cineasten in diesem Film wahrscheinlich nicht widerspiegeln werden. Macht mir das was aus? ABSOLUT NICHT!
Und es bei weitem nicht so, dass ich Qualität verachte oder nur auf doofe Unterhaltung stehe. Ich habe es genossen, Großteile meiner Abend-Freizeit in den letzten Jahren damit zu verbringen, mir zuhause auf DVD und Blu-Ray absolute Top-Serien wie Sherlock, Die Sopranos, Homeland, Breaking Bad, The Shield, etc. anzusehen. Nur interessiert mich so was im Kino nicht, wenn ich mir Transformers ansehe. Was wird denn hier bitte erwartet? Dies ist ein TRANSFORMERS-Film von MICHAEL BAY! Muss man mehr sagen? Wer hier schauspielerische Glanzleistungen wie in „Der Pate“, Dialoge wie bei Shakespeares „Hamlet“ oder eine Story wie bei „Inception“ oder „Memento“ erwartet, der ist hier leider falsch und sollte sich diesen Film auch nicht ansehen.

Transformers - Ära des Untergangs bietet dafür absolut PERFEKTE Popcorn-Action-Kino-Unterhaltung vom Feinsten. Und Ära des Untergangs ist meiner Meinung nach der Beste der bisher vier Filme, auch besser als der von vielen geliebte erste Teil von 2007.

Der Film ist laut, schnell, voll mit Action, und sehr lang. Sogar der bisher längste Transformers-Film mit 166 Minuten Spielzeit. Nur habe ich mich im Kinosessel keine einzige Sekunde gelangweilt. Nicht eine Sekunde! Ich liebe diesen Film. Die visuellen Effekte (vor allem in IMAX-3D) sind einfach atemberaubend. Der Score von Steve Jablonsky ist fabelhaft (ganz besonders die Autobots-Reunite-Sequenz).

Jetzt zur grundlegenden Story, ohne zu viel zu verraten oder überraschende Twists vorwegzunehmen:
Der Film baut auf der Story der ersten drei Teile auf. Vier Jahre nach der Schlacht von Chicago aus Transformers III jagt eine CIA-Eingreiftruppe namens Cemetery Wind unter Führung von Harold Attinger (gespielt von Kelsey Grammar) die verbliebenen Transformer auf der Erde, und zwar auch die Autobots. Optimus Prime hat ein Notsignal gesendet und den Autobots empfohlen, sich vor den Menschen zu verstecken.
Doch der CIA gelingt es in Kooperation mit dem Transformer und Kopfgeld-Jäger Lockdown die Autobots nach und nach auszuschalten, darunter auch so einen beliebten Charakter wie Ratchet. Attinger möchte den Planeten Erde von allen Transformers bereinigen, damit hier nie wieder ein Alien-Krieg stattfinden kann.

Währenddessen kauft der finanziell klamme Erfinder und allein erziehende Vater Cade Yeager (gespielt von Mark Wahlberg) mit seinem Partner Lucas einen verrosteten Truck aus einem alten Kino, in der Hoffnung diesen auszuschlachten und zu Geld machen zu können, um seiner Tochter Tessa (Nicola Peltz), die kurz vor dem Abschluss steht und auf ein Stipendium hofft, das College zu finanzieren. Tessa datet heimlich den Rennfahrer Shane.

Die Firma KSI mit Hauptsitz in Chicago arbeitet seit den Ereignissen von Teil III durch Re-Engineering an der Transformer-Technologie. KSI möchte selbst eigene Transformer zur vollautomatischen Landesverteidigung herstellen. Der KSI-Chefdesigner Joshua Joyce (Stanley Tucci) hat dazu den Gen-Code der Transformer geknackt und ist mithilfe des seltenen Erdmetalls „Transformium“ in der Lage, von der Regierung gesteuerte Prototypen herzustellen, darunter die beiden Kronjuwelen Galvatron und Stinger.

Attinger geht für Joshua Joyce einen Deal mit Lockdown ein und hilft diesem bei der lebendigen Beschaffung von Optimus Prime. Wenn es Lockdown gelingt, Optimus in Gewahrsam zu nehmen und in sein Gefängnis-Schiff zu sperren, so händigt Lockdown Attinger ein Transformer-Artefakt namens “Die Saat“ aus, mit der sich hinreichend neues „Transformium“ produzieren lässt, um damit eine massive Armee von vollautomatischen, von Menschen kontrollierten Transformern herstellen zu können.

Während Cade in seiner Scheune an dem alten Truck herumbastelt stellt sich heraus, dass es sich um niemand anderes als um Optimus Prime handelt, der sich nach einem Angriff auf ihn (von Cemetery Wind und Lockdown in Mexiko) in dem verrosteten und beschädigten Truck getarnt und versteckt hat. Optimus hat inzwischen den Glauben an die Menschen verloren. Cade bietet seine Hilfe an, um Optimus schwere Schäden zu reparieren. Doch leider findet die CIA heraus, wo sich Optimus versteckt und macht sich mit Lockdown auf den Weg zu Cades Farm …

Danach fliegt einem die Leinwand um die Ohren und es macht einfach nur Spaß!

Ich behaupte nicht, dass die Story genial ist, aber sie ist auch nicht so schlecht wie sie teilweise gemacht wird. Ich war weder nicht in der Lage sie nachzuvollziehen, noch haben mich die angeblich immensen Story-Lücken gestört. Der Film wird geschnitten, man kann die Geschichte nicht in Echtzeit a la 24 erzählen. Und wer die Entstehung des Films im Vorfeld etwas verfolgt hat, der wusste, dass nicht alle Fragen in diesem Film geklärt werden, sondern einige Dinge bewusst auf die noch folgenden Teil V und VI verschoben werden.

In der ersten Dreiviertelstunde werden im Film langsam alle wichtigen Charaktere eingeführt und vorgestellt und die Ausgangslage für die dann folgende zweistündige Actionschlacht geliefert. Gerade dieser ruhige Beginn (von einigen hier als zu langsam und zäh beschrieben) ist meiner Meinung ein großes Plus des Films, ähnlich wie im ersten Transformers-Film von 2007.

Persönlich kann ich dem brandneuen Cast deutlich mehr abgewinnen, als dem ursprünglichen Cast um Sam Witwicky (Shia Labeouf), seinen Freundinnen und seiner Familie. Die Geschichte war nach Teil III einfach aus erzählt.
Mark Wahlberg ist für diesen Action-Blockbuster ein absoluter Gewinn. Kelsey Grammer spielt den bis zum Äußersten bereiten CIA-Mann wirklich gut und glaubhaft, nicht zu vergessen sein Mann fürs Grobe James Savoy (gespielt von Titus Welliver). Stanley Tucci als Joshua Joyce hat einige lustige Momente. Ja ja, der Humor ist vielleicht etwas flach, na und?!

Was dieser Teil Ära des Untergangs den anderen um Längen voraus hat, ist: Er holt viel mehr aus den Robotern raus.
1. Lockdown als neutraler Kopfgeldjäger ist ein absolut genialer Bösewicht. Lockdowns Raumschiff „Knight Ship“ alleine bietet einen unfassbaren Schauwert und hat eine solche zerstörerische Wucht in den letzten 20 Minuten, Wahnsinn!
2. Lockdowns Auftraggeber (die so genannten „Schöpfer“) bleiben in gewisser Weise ein Rätsel, das erst in den folgenden Teilen der mit diesem Teil beginnenden neuen Trilogie gelöst werden wird. Diese Schöpfer spielen eine wichtige Rolle, sie haben nämlich die Transformer gebaut. Als Transformers-Fan keine neue Vorgeschichte, aber für die Filme eine neue, coole Richtungsänderung.
3. Optimus Primes Haltung zu den Menschen hat sich komplett gedreht, er glaubt nicht mehr an sie und ist unter Umständen bereit, sie sogar zu töten.
4. Die brandneuen Autobots Drift, Hound und Crosshairs (in dieser Reihenfolge von Platz 3 bis 1 meiner Favoritenliste) bringen überdies dazu viel mehr Charakterzeichnung ein, als alle anderen Autobots aus den vorherigen Teilen zusammen (von Optimus mal abgesehen). Man hat sich hier wirklich Zeit genommen, schärfere Roboter-Charaktere zu skizzieren, die alle auf ihre Weise Besonderheiten aufweisen und zu einer ganz speziellen Dynamik untereinander führen. Außerdem sind die neuen Autobots wie schon in Teil III (z.B. bei Que) viel menschlicher vom Aussehen. Ich befürworte das. Und mal ehrlich: Es ist ein Transformers-Film, also möchte man hier auch einfach verdammt coole Roboter sehen, fertig!
5. Endlich sieht man in Ära des Untergangs so viel Roboter-Konversation zwischen den Autobots untereinander bzw. mit den Menschen wie nie zuvor. Im Übrigen darf man hier ruhig mal die deutsche Synchronisation loben: Die Synchronsprecher der Transformer sind super gewählt und passen perfekt (z.B. Lockdowns Stimme ist die deutsche Stimme von Dr. House!).
6. Die von Menschen gemachten Prototypen Galvatron und Stinger warten mit einem tollen Upgrade auf, was die Transformation betrifft. So was hat man bisher auch noch nicht gesehen, auch wenn Transformers-Nostalgiker diese wohl verteufeln werden. Und die herkömmlichen Transformationen der Autobots sind wie immer phantastisch. Die Highlights sind Drift als Triple-Changer, der sowohl einen Fahrzeugmodus (Bugatti) als auch einen als Helikopter hat und natürlich Optimus in seinem neuen Western Star Truck Modus. Und als Reminiszenz an alle G1-Fans aus den 80ern besitzt Optimus als Tarnmodus einen alten, verrosteten flachnasigen Truck. Zufrieden?!
7. Zu den Fahrzeugmodi der Transformer muss man nicht viel sagen: Lamborghini Aventador, Pagani Huayra, Corvette Stingray C7, Chevrolet Camarro 2014 und 1967 SS, Bugatti Veyron, Freightliner Argosy Truck, Western Star Truck, … Viel mehr geht nicht!
8. Aus dem nach Teil III getöteten Überresten Megatrons und den andere toten Decepticons werden von Menschen gebaute, neue Prototypen hergestellt. Und jeder Transformers-Fan, der den Namen Galvatron hört, weiß, was passieren wird …
9. Die Action-Szenen stehen denen aus Teil III in Nichts nach. Vor allem: Die Dinobots!!!! Es dauert lange, sehr lange, bis die vier Dinobots Grimlock Slug, Scorn und Strafe von der Leine gelassen werden, aber dann geht’s ab… Der reinste Augenschmaus, was die CGI da fertig gebracht hat. Jurassic Park meets Transformers!!!!

Natürlich gibt es auch Dinge, die man hätte besser machen können. Muss das offensichtliche Product-Placement sein? Nein. Ja, und? Das muss ich bei vielen Serien auch ertragen.

Hätte man aus der Story mehr rausholen können? Wahrscheinlich.

Und so kann man sich gerne noch über andere Kleinigkeiten aufregen, so oft und so lange man will.

Mein Fazit ist und bleibt:
Ich LIEBE diesen Film! Transformers – Ära des Untergangs ist eine Art Reboot-Light und Fortführung des Transformers-Franchise mit neuen, frischen, Ideen und mit den zu erwartenden phantastischen visuellen Effekten, mit tollem Score und atemberaubenden Action-Szenen. Ein bombastischer Sci-Fi-Action-Blockbuster, der einem die Birne wegsprengt und die Ohren bluten lässt. Einfach nur zurücklehnen und genießen! Er wird auf Blu-Ray (und auch auf DVD) phantastisch aussehen.
