First off, please understand this review comes from a pretty hardcore Transformers fan.

I was super excited to get this, and for the most part, it's pretty satisfactory; the book is very well written, features some incredible artwork (including contributions from some of the best artists from the Transformers IDW comics line,) and is a pretty lengthy read. The most devout followers of Primus may find some inconsistancies in this novel's lore; however, as this is likely the official canon, it's hard to find fault with a few minor details.

My biggest concern is the Autobot Emblem that contains the book. I fear the majority of the item's cost is due to this fancy book-holder, and that's a problem. It's very light and feels cheaply made. The rear-set speakers (that require 3 AAA batteries!) are not very good fidelity. When I first took it out of the packaging, a family member asked, "Is that a toy?" And that's pretty much what it feels like.
Worse yet, after opening and closing it once or twice, the top-right third got jammed on one of the internal parts and required quite a bit of force to open again, after which a small piece of plastic was heard rattling around, and needed to be shaken out. The toy still works as far as I can tell, but it's rather disconcerting.
All in all, I'm glad I bought it. But I wish I could have just bought the book for thirty dollars, as opposed to the whole thing for sixty.

So my mother asked what I wanted for christmas and I told her about this book coming out, and being as old as the Transformers and a lifelong fan, she agreed it was a great idea for a Christmas present.
When you order this it comes in a huge box. The outside sleeve is matte black with raised metallic logo and printing on the front. the box itself has a star pattern and some more fancy printing. inside is a black plastic tray and directions on how to use the case.
then you find the shield and the book.

So first off, this is set in, around and about the Aligned continuity. Which is basically the comics, Prime TV series and the war for and Fall of Cybertron Games. As such this explains and NAMES the 13 primes, and goes from there. this is basically the canon bible rewritten and packaged for fans.
While the aligned universe takes a lot of nods from and makes references to the G1 universe, it is still a little bit different, this is NOT G1. Please dont expect that, or you will be VERY disappointed.

on to the shield, theres a handful of complaints here about the shield. Yes it is plastic. It's not die cast. It fits together a little loosely and its awkward to open. It also designed for you to take the book out and hang on the wall. (It will hang with the book in it, but id still be careful, YMMV)

The book is printed on a heavier semi gloss stock than most, the cover is well printed and etched with the face of optimus and the ink and color is beyond that of any of the paperback collected comics. The concept art here is amazing and I've yet to finish reading it, but so far, the writing is on par with that of the comics, not too heady, but its not See Spot Run.

I, like many Transformers fans, have been waiting with bated breath for this books' release. And I was not disappointed when it arrived. The contents of this book are incredible. The artwork is stunning. The history of Cybertron is told in line with the Prime/War of/Fall of Cybertron continuity. This makes the most sense as it is the hot thing in the community right now. However, those wishing for a more G1 related telling of Cybertron's history may be disappointed. The story of the 13 original Primes is incredible and I couldn't stop turning the pages. The writing itself is sophisticated and the adult reader will be kept enthralled. However, that is not to say that this book isn't suitable for children. It may prove a challenge for some, but this book is definitely appropriate for a child to read as well.
As for the packaging of the book, I believe that this is where the majority of the cost of the volume lies. The book comes in a case that is shaped like an Autobot symbol. This case comes apart and it complete with transformation sound effects. There is a peg in the back of the case as well in case you want to hang it on the wall. This case is cool and the sounds are awesome. However, it does feel a little delicate and I would recommend treating the case gently. The book and case also come in a larger box which is also nicely designed. When you receive it in the mail, the package you will get is huge compared to its contents.
I bought this volume on sale, so it only came to about 60 bucks. I know when it was originally released it was almost 100. It's definitely worth the 60 I paid here for it, however 90-100 is a steep price. That being said, if you are a true Transformers fan or know someone who is, this book is a definite must-have.

In ante resting book. Well worth it for the stunning and exclusive art. The story... The first half is fantastic. The second half, like much Transformers lore feels more than a bit disjointed, shoehorned in. Like the editor on the back half was missing key continuity from one page to the next. The back half was clearly trying to blend lore from various contradictory sources and not perfectly.

The "toy" component of the storage shell is a neat gimmick, but one that I am sure will not see much daylight. Because it comes in a very nicely marked box, itself protected by a nice cardboard sleeve with a big Autobot logo on it. I suspect most people will play with the case once or twice, then pack it back in its safe plastic tray inside the nice box in its nice sleeve etc.
