Love the story and goth look/artwork. The story isn't as forward or not told enough, that at times it feels incomplete. Or jumps from one area to another with no fillers. Nothing wrong in using your imaginations, but just seems like there could be more. This would make a great animation movie. Last GI Joe animation movie was great. If they use that style to create this book into animation, I think the creators would come out with a great product. Openly, Not a bad story, too bad when other books that followed this serious wasn't complete. Due to lack of incompleteness, I felt it was a dime short of a dollar. Nobody likes to be short change of a great story line.

This book is a great example of what happens when artists and writers have the freedom to step outside of the "universes" dictated by cartoon shows designed to sell toys and promote new characters. Set in WWII, this book shows a different side to GI Joe and the Transformers. A lot of license is taken, so purists be warned--this doesn't have Spike Witwicky, the whole Snake Eyes backstory or the other small nuances (some are annoyances,<cough> Spike <cough>), but overall a very interesting and well drawn book. Much better than the competing title from Devil's Due, which is miserable IMO.

Recommend this book to anyone who's not an uebergeek that gets offended if everything isn't as they remembered at age 7...My only complaint is that the "limited" size (6 regular comic issues) didn't allow for a full set of character development, or further adventures...true fans want more!!!

Please, DW, give us more!!!

Disappointing with large narrative gaps and confusing artwork

The problem with this story is that there are large gaps in the narrative while the art, while it does have some appeal, is still not clear enough to tell who is who.
The story is much like an earlier GI JOE vs. Transformers story, where Cobra finds the Transformers and turns them into war machines, only set during WWII era. Unfortunately, unlike that earlier version, this story leaves out vital parts of the story, leaving the readers to guess as to how events progressed. It's like the creators had a storyline in mind, but then only put the highlights down on paper. Fleshed out, it would probably be quite good. As is, feels very rushed.

I should have ordered the physical copy. The Kindle version is awful (Kindle for PC). First the only screen-resolution controls consist of fullscreen or not fullscreen. I have two 36" monitors made for hi-rez/hi-def display. The full-page spreads, which are frequent in this comic, are done at such a size that in fullscreen they barely take up half the screen. The text is illegible, even for 20/20 vision. Since there are no controls to view the size other than fullscreen, I had to use the Windows and + key. Even bumping it up to 50% increase, the print becomes blurry and unreadable. I'm asking for a refund so I can spend almost twice as much to read a physical copy. At least that way I can read the words.

I am blown away by this work. The story, also the choice of words, sentences and phrases... they are profound! The only equivalent I know to compare is Batman: Master Race... nothing cheesy, every thing has depth. The inter relationships between the allies, and foes... the micro story arcs, the character development, the drawings and color styles all come together to make this one of the finest graphic novels I own. It is up there, equal to the Dark Knight Returns series and Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale's The Long Halloween series. In other words, it has achieved perfection.

Transformers/G I Joe is fantastic! This book has some great artwork by Jae Lee and written by John Ney Rieber! The Transformers/G I Joe story is set during World War II (circa 1939) when the Decepticons and The Cobra join forces with each other. It'up to the Autobots and G I Joe to stop the World War II Decepticon/Cobra Alliance! I love this book very much! Jae Lee's artwork alone is both refreshing and new for the Transformers and G I Joe characters. I love the way Duke, Flint, Snakeyes, Lady Jaye and Scarlett interact with Autobot Leader Optimus Prime the Autobots! Cobra Commander, Destro, and the Baroness also interacts well with Megatron and the Decepticons! Buy it! Highly Recommended! A

As other have said, this is great concept. The idea of transformers and gi joe during World War 2 either grabs you, or it doesn't, I thought it was a very cool way to go. The art is good, but it's very dark, and I had a tough time tracking who was who - I would have been completely lost witout the editorial notes that identify a shift from group to group. Even some of the action between panels got lost, or was hard for me to follow - I couldn't always tell who was getting hit or what was going on. Some of the beats (like the plan to help civilians on the beach) we simply don't see after they are setup. As others said, it doesn't feel like it quite deliver the band of brothers that I wanted to see here.

Good, but not spectacular

This is a very cool idea for a crossover, and I have to say that it was fairly well executed. However, the book was not perfect. For starters, it is an extremely G.I. Joe oriented story. The characters are very cool, but there are just too many and not all of them get more than a couple lines. So in the end, you get a basic feel for what the characters are like, but nothing deep what so ever. Duke rarely shows any depth, Snake Eyes dominates half the story, but nothing is really gleaned except he has a feud with Stormshadow and all of the Cobra characters get about two pages of appearances.

The actual Transformers are given even less time in-frame. The Decepticons are featured way more than the Autobots and given a lot more dialogue for most of the story. And even when the Autobots are brought in, they talk far more than they actually fight. There are really only a couple pages of actual combat, and rarely between any of the Transformers themselves, with more action being Joes vs. a Decepticon or maybe two frames of Grimlock shooting something. Only a couple Autobots are even shown in vehicle form!

The biggest issue with the story has to be the art. It looks very cool, but the entire story is extremely dark and you can barely see any of the Transformers except for a head or an arm at times. Also, combat is not conveyed very well, with people just seeming to jump from place to place and characters receiving random injuries with no real explanation for them.

All in all, if you are a major Transformers or G.I. Joe fan (or both) then pick this up if you really need it. However, if you are just a casual reader, don't spend the ridiculous amounts this comic is going for, and find another series to hold you over.

It took me 13 years to finally get around to reading this crossover (it was published in 2004). I can see now why it's no longer in print. John Ney Rieber delivers a muddled origin story that takes place within a single battle. For some reason he sets the tale in 1939 but this setting does nothing to influence the story. One would think that the Germans or Russians would get involved in this epic battle but no, WWII has nothing to do with it, so why bother? We see the assembly of G.I. Joe, Cobra, and the reawakening of the Autobots and Decepticons when Rieber could have skipped the origins and just gotten to the battle. We already know who these characters are. About a quarter of the story is dedicated to Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes trying to kill each other relentlessly which has nothing to do with the overall narrative. Optimus Prime does almost nothing the entire time and neither does Megatron. Jae Lee's art, while better than the writing, doesn't work either. Nearly every single panel is a silhouette. The color work, while having merit, is just too monotone. This is a dark, dark book. It seems to be perpetually dusk in every page. Lee's art delivers some beautiful iconic images, but overall it's an overuse of india ink.
