Transformers Platinum Edition Predaking Figure [Amazon Exclusive]
Predaking is the perfect warrior. Powerful, remorseless, obedient, and nearly unstoppable, he hunts Autobots with a predatory intensity absent from even the most diabolical of his Decepticon peers. The massive x-ray laser he carries as a primary weapon is an instrument of singular destructive potential, capable of incinerating entire forests, liquefying steel and cement, and instantly turning an entire battlefield into a blasted landscape of rubble and fused glass.
Autobots beware, because the ultimate predator is on the hunt for someone to pound. He's more powerful than any Predacon, because he's made of five of them. Your Predacon Divebomb, Predacon Headstrong, Predacon Rampage, Predacon Razorclaw, and Predacon Torox figures all convert from robot mode to beast mode and back. But when the battle calls for a giant warrior, they combine to build one enormous Predaking figure! His sword will keep any Autobot at bay.

Because I was letdown by the item itself. (I'll get into more of that in a moment.)
What did you like or dislike?
It's Predaking! (like) It's wobbly and floppy! (dislike) Has all the precious, coveted accessories! (like) Paint job isn't always the greatest, and the sticker quality is borderline trash. (dislike) Die-Cast metal is way too heavy. (dislike)
Who would you recommend this item to?
Hardcore fans. I do mean, Hardcore. If you're a casual fan or someone who's been looking for a chance to finally get this guy, I'm iffy on recommending it. (Again, I'll explain.)
Elaboration:
First things first. This is a G1 reissue that's available in the US market. Can't ignore the significance of that. Predaking and Piranacon are the only two G1 combiner reissues available to us, instead of having to import from the other side of the world. Amazing.
The packaging is gorgeous, especially the artwork on the box. (I love that it says "Fantasy situation" so you can't sue them because the toy inside does nothing like the artwork. (I.E. strike a pose) laughable.)
It's a full set of the highly coveted metal version Predacons, with all accessories, all for one reasonable price. (Have you seen aftermarket prices for the original and it's previous reissues? Ouch.)
Here come the problems:
1. The build quality is low in spots, the mold degradation is horrible. (too thin plastic wrapped around hefty metal. 2 explains the degradation issue.)
2. Rampage and Divebomb refuse to stay connected at the shoulders, depending on their orientation. Beast mode legs on both Rampage and Razorclaw have their ratchets off by at least one click, Tantrum's head seems like it could break off and doesn't always snap in place for beast mode. (The arms won't stay connected to the torso in combined form. (Too much weight for the shoulder connectors to hold them. You have to sit Predaking just right, or they'll fall right out.) The beast mode legs keep swinging backward because the feet won't sit flush. (It's always just one leg, while the other three seem to be fine.) Tantrum's head is supposed to snap with a click when in beast mode, and swing around for robot mode. (The snap is there, but never connects. The base of the head rubs up against the metal chest piece and forces it up and away, which worries me that it could cause the head to break off.)
3. The paint, while very nice looking, isn't always applied well. (Due to it being Die-Cast metal, the paint not only doesn't want to stick to the metal, it chips easily.)
4. The stickers are so thin, so terribly made that even without damage to them, they start falling apart. (this set has no red eye sticker set, more on that in a moment.)
5. Due to the weight of the metal, this guy wants to bend forward and has come close to toppling over several times. (This is a design flaw that's been there since the '80s, but due to the mold wear and the plastic quality and it's thinness, it's even worse now.)
Final thoughts:
Hasbro put a '13 stamp on each of the figures, leading you to believe they're a brand new Predacon mold. It's not true. This is a repack of the '10 TakaraTomy reissue. Right down to the color scheme and paint choices. If you sat them side by side, you couldn't tell which is which. If these are retooled from the '10 version, it must be internal or something, because it isn't apparent on the outside.
The '10 set had the same problems. So, we were sold subpar overstock in a nice box. If you're a hardcore fan, none of this will bother you. If you're a casual fan, seek out an older reissue or the originals. (No one should have their first Predaking experience be this one.) If you've been waiting a long time to own one of these and this is all you can afford, then go for this, just know it's not going to wow you after awhile.
The figures themselves are excellent. The robot modes are fantastic. The beast modes, if you can get them to stand right, look gorgeous. If you can get them to stay combined and not have the wings flop all over, it does make for an impressive display piece.
It's just not a $120.00 display piece.
The price for this guy is painful. I received mine as a gift and because of that I love it and cherish it, but I see it's glaring flaws. Had I paid $120.00 for this? I'd have been angry. I'd have had buyer's remorse something fierce. Worth $80-100.00 at the most.
Unfortunately, the big boy shows his age in some ways. The die-cast is plentiful but it's not all well-placed; Headstrong's entire upper body is so heavy that he likes to tip over. The wings on Divebomb have a habit of falling off. Several joints feel unusually loose, such as the connector peg on Divebomb, which borders on floppy. The sticker sheet is neat, but the stickers tend to peel or rip. And the Predacons are so over-armed that it's actually quite easy to lose their accessories, especially when they're combined.
Also, I think Divebomb has a QC issue, as his leg ratchets don't want to line up properly. But that's probably just mine.
For people who already own a Predaking, this one changes what was yellow plastic on the original to metallic gold (don't worry, it's not GPS), uses the die-cast version of the original release, and adds a sword taken from Beast Hunters Optimus Prime - probably to sub in for Razorclaw's sword, which is a bit dinky in the hands of the combiner. The Optimus sword is a bit less dinky, but it doesn't really fit the aesthetic and it doesn't sit in his grip as well as the other swords, so I tend to leave it.
Overall, Predaking is a very excessive toy, but that's not really a bad thing. I got him on sale, and I feel I got my money's worth; he's a legitimate piece of history and it's easy to understand why he became such a Grail. When you lift those two pounds of robot out of the box, you'll understand why Transformers G1 still has so much staying power.
Top reviews from other countries
Although I've never owned or handled the complete Predaking, I do own Rampage, here are some differences with the original:
The yellow plastic has been painted gold, an improvement, in my opinion.
The stickers have been modified, at least on Rampage, but not much.
Of course it's stamped for the year of production
Pros:
- Massive toy
- Wonderful display toy
- Put's to shame the other combiners that were produced around that time.
- Very tough toy
- Hours of sticker fun.
Cons:
- Some of the robot forms are less successful than others
- Each Predacons come with two identical guns. They've mistakenly given me 3 of the same gun, Honestly I don't really mind, but some people might.
- Although it's a wonderful display toy, it's weight makes it unwieldy when combined. Like most other combiner
- The drawing on the box is pretty cool, but don't expect to be able to put it back in the box once you've liberated him from his restraints
