I learned about this book at a convention, and I expected an entertaining romp with my favorite giant robots from outer space in the style of the original "Generation 1" cartoon. I ended up being rather disappointed -- the book is a fair bit darker than the cartoon, being based on the comic books by Dreamwave comics (now defunct) instead of the show.
That's not to say it's a terrible book -- it's well-written and entertaining. It just felt off to me, as I was expecting it to hew more closely to the cartoon. So seeing the characters act "off" from their cartoon selves was something of a shock, and I never quite got used to it.
Perhaps the biggest jolt for me was the humans' reaction to the Autobots -- Optimus Prime and his troops are hated by the majority of Earth. In the original cartoon, most humans seemed perfectly accepting of the Autobots, and while the book's depiction of humanity's reaction to giant robots in their midst might be more "realistic," it jarred with me, seeing as I was expecting something different.
The other drawback of this book is that it expects you to be familiar with events in the comics, and so drops you into the middle of events without much explanation. Hardcore fans who have read the comics probably won't have any trouble, but those who are fairly new to the TF universe, or are like me and simply don't read many (or any) of the comics, will probably be lost.
If you pick up this book, please keep in mind that it is NOT based on the original cartoon, and that it requires the reader to know some of the backstory already for certain things to make sense. Caveat emptor... buyer beware...
