In their priceless author commentaries they talk about drawing on all incarnations of both franchises as well as other comics and movies to make a melange that must seem like utter nonsense to a new fan but poetry to someone already immersed in both toy lines.
I grew up playing with the toys, watching the cartoon and reading to comics so I am clearly in the poetry camp. Even so Scioli and Barber's habit of skipping ahead or summing up events in a single panel or line of dialogue leaves me scrambling to keep up.
This is a breathless book, filled with moments the feel like a grade-schooler telling a story, and then there was an explosion! And then a robot attack! And then...
Combined with Scioli's more impressionist art this book is not like any other GI Joe or Transformer book I've read before but somehow it all works. So if you know what you're getting into, this is a lot of fun.
