I wasn't disappointed. Daniel uses real life testimonies of people who have been deeply impacted by this simple biblical approach to prayer. I have always appreciated simplicity. Having spent twenty-two years in the Air Force, one thing I leaned is "the simpler the better" when leading people. Using the Lord's Prayer as the frame work to create a simple 4/4 time diagram that teaches Reverence-Response-Request-Readiness, easy to remember and easy to teach.
Using scripture to start the "reverence" the Spirit and the Word invoke the response and the way you go. God's word, The Holy Spirit guides the prayer time naturally. I have never been this excited about prayer and I have never seen others get this excited about prayer once they experience it. I am still learning and now I feel equipped with the tools to lead my church in prayer. I'm sure I will go back to this book more than once. If you're looking to see yourself and others get excited about prayer, buy this book. You will not be disappointed.
So here is what you need to do. if you want to skip all the hype and get to the meat of the book, just jump to chapter 14 and read on. The author finally does get around to giving you the tools and functions that you need to help you get the relationship of a closer walk with God. He just takes forever to get you there. Maybe he just needs to do a "short" version for those of us who just want to know how without all the window dressing.
When I first heard Daniel Henderson speak a few years ago, he said one thing that no one could let go of: "The only enduring motive for prayer is that God is worthy to be sought." That profound statement, which shows up in the book, could really summarize the whole thing. Learn what it means to let God start the conversation. Discover the freedom of agenda-less prayer. Delight in the truth that God wants good things for His children - but the good things all pale in comparison to Him wanting to reveal Himself to us.
I highly recommend this book!
Finally, there is a section which encourages corporate prayer with the goal of being united in the work of God in our churches and the world.
I am so pleased to own this book and now that I have completed the reading, I play to use it often as a tool to pursue a prayer life that is pleasing to God.
Bethany House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.
Unlike devouring other literary works instantaneously, this particular book has remained by my bedside. Taking its time to saturate my being, again as if on cue, the timing in my life could not warrant this message more. A spiritually resuscitating read, Transforming Prayer is freshly written. Henderson uses a humorous approach that is tastefully targeted to lighten the reader's perspective on a vital subject that has been tainted over time unscripturally by men. It is a perfect treat to carry or keep around for spontaneous counsel.
My deep appreciation to the publisher for providing this book free for review.
