Editorial Reviews
From the Inside Flap
"Only an anthology could create the mosaic that would display the profound paradigm shift offered here: defining terrorism according to the experiences of the victims--unarmed civilians who are violently attacked or threatened--and not by any ideology or purpose. Each tile in the mosaic offers a catalyst to radical transformation of the calamitously increasing scale of such assaults, from suicide bombers to state terrorism, and offers real hope for a way out of the death spiral. This should be read at military academies and defense departments as well as by teachers and religious leaders." -Deirdre English, Director, Felker Magazine Center, Graduate School of Journalism, UC Berkeley and former editor of Mother Jones
"This collection of writings reveals a wealth of proposals for transforming the combustible conditions that often produce terror, as well as for the reconciliation and healing of terror's victims. This book is not only an inspired and singular achievement, it is a courageous and bold challenge to a world too often jaded and numbed by the omnipresence of violence to consider any creative alternatives. Here is a work that couldn't be more timely, relevant or persuasive in its call for us to transform the terror that bedevils us all, individuals and cultures alike." - Phil Cousineau, author of Beyond Forgiveness: Reflections on Atonement and A Seat at the Table: Huston Smith in Conversation with Native Americans on Religious Freedom
"This volume brings together the wisest voices of our era to reveal the prevalence of terror in our world, and its unconsidered consequences. Until a behavior has a name, it cannot be challenged. This amazing collection of wise and beautiful voices challenges our received definition of terror, and moves us a step further toward a world of peace." - Marilyn Sewell, editor of Cries of the Spirit

About the author

Susan Griffin has written over twenty books, including non-fiction, poetry and plays. Her work addresses many social and political issues, social justice, the oppression of women, ecology, war and peace, economic inequities and democracy. Often she approaches her subjects at a slant, using and following the music of language, metaphor, stories and incidents from her own life to reveal the underside of larger histories and realms. Her book, A Chorus of Stones, the Private Life of War, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and a NY Times Notable book in the year it was published. Woman and Nature, considered a classic of environmental writing, is credited for inspiring the eco-feminist movement. The Book of the Courtesans introduced a hidden chapter in women’s history. Along with her co-editor, Karin Carrington, who is a psychotherapist, she has just completed editing an anthology called Transforming Terror, Remembering the Soul of the World, with a preface by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and contributions from thinkers, psychologists, spiritual and political leaders and poets from diverse cultures and religions, including Mahmoud Darwish, Riane Eisler, Fritjof Capra, Huston Smith, Ariel Dorfman, Dan Ellsberg, and Fatema Mernissi. She is at work now on a novel about climate change and a non-fiction book, The Book of Housewifery, about the hidden meanings and values in domesticity. She and her work have been given many awards, among them a Guggenheim Foundation Award and an Emmy.

Why would anyone continue to belive these ridiculous stories, that have now been exposed to be lies by many competent independent researchers (not in the mainstream media of course). These lies that continue to justify brutality, war and outright murder. The fact is our country has been taken over by a ruthless and facist corporate oligarchy. It has been working on this a long time and it is tightening its grip everyday. It should be quite obvious by now. It now runs and owns our government (both fake parties, notice how nothing much changes? It's a dog and pony show, folks, wake up), it owns the media, the courts, the miltary industrial complex, intelligence agencies etc, etc. This power structure misleads and deceives all who "cannot see it" or "do not want to see it" and that is a lot of people.
This is why ignorance is the most dangerous of all, because it is the only way this power structure can thrive. Unfortunately, most Americans are ignorant of this, including the writer's and editors of this book and that is why things in this country will continue to deteriorate until people wake up to some very disturbing truths. One of these "disturbing truths" is that our corporate run government and its "conspiracy theory" regarding 9/11 cannot possibly be true. There is literally mountains of evidence for this now see [...] among many others. So, you and I have been lied to. We've been lied to about 9/11 and as of yet have not been told the truth of what really happened on that day. One thing is for sure and that is that the official story is a fraud. The whole "War on Terror" is a fraud, a concocted plan to manipulate the American people into endless war, eventually aimed to destroy this country. A tryannical structure has been building it's networks for many years and now it has a stranglehold on this country and it will be sqeezing more and more. There is numerous evidence for this from many well researched sources here is one good and consise one, The article is entitled, The Elite, the Great Game and World war III by Prof. Dr. Mujahid Kamran [...]
There are many other articles of interest and other helpful links as well. Do your research and find out. The problem with this book is that it never gets into anything of real substance, which would be capable of informing and warning people about what is really going on. Because of this, it can never hope to bring about the changes that it is claiming to want. I call it progressive "lite" because there is nothing here that is a threat to the power structures that are driving this world. This so-called opposition ends up not being opposition at all. By not having any real teeth or bite, this book, like many others, is just part of the established order helping to perpetuate the very thing it claims to oppose. The first step to healing our world is to Wake Up, to look into this abyss of darkness and expose it. One may need to do this both individually and collectively. The writers and editors of this book, need to dig much deeper than they are digging and they also need to put there ego's aside and realize that they have been duped. They are not as insightful as they may believe themselves to be.The sooner we wake up to this as Americans and citizens of the Globe, the sooner we can begin to restore some sanity to our nation and to this world.
For some, the shock and trauma of all this might seem overwhelming, but Truth and Goodness will win out in the end, even if it takes 10,000 years.
If anyone isn't already familiar with Susan Griffin's outstanding literary contributions to issues ranging from nature, spirituality, politics, and gender and race equality, this book should be a gateway into an essential library. For fans of her work like myself, this book was relished and will continue to be a source of much-needed inspiration and wisdom that will guide me professionally and personally.
